The nursing philosophy in Beacon Hospital is a collaborative approach where compassion and care are delivered through touch, a kind act, through competent clinical interventions or through listening and seeking to understand the others experience. Beacon Hospital has satellite locations in Mullingar and Limerick. The benefit for patients is that they can access certain specialties locally, thereby minimising travel and any inconvenience. If a procedure is required this is carried out in Sandyford, and resulting follow up takes place back in their own community. For more information please visit our website. Ireland’s First SOMATOM Pro.Pulse CT Scanner, Expanding Access to CT Coronary Angiograms! 🎉

Beacon Hospital is delighted to announce the official opening of our new Siemens SOMATOM Pro.Pulse CT system, the first and only installation of its kind in Ireland. The new scanner is dedicated exclusively to CT Coronary Angiography (CTCA). 💙

This investment significantly expands our CTCA capacity and provides enhanced diagnostic accuracy, ultra-low radiation doses and improved comfort for patients.

This is a significant addition to our diagnostic imaging service and a reflection of Beacon Hospital’s commitment to excellence in patient care. With this investment, we have significantly reduced the waiting times for cardiac CT scans. Beacon Hospital can offer early and late appointments, seven days a week, ensuring timely access for patients and referring clinicians.

A huge thank you to all involved in bringing this project to completion including the team from Siemens Healthineers and our Radiology, Cardiology, Medical Physics, Projects, Procurement, IT, Patient Services and Facilities teams.

Beacon Hospital remains committed to investing in advanced cardiac imaging and delivering best-in-class care. Congratulations to all involved in this milestone! 💙

It’s the most wonderful time of year! 🎄This week we kick started the festive season and celebrated the arrival of our lovely 15ft Christmas tree in our main reception!

We had mince pies and a beautiful choir who got the whole hospital in the festive cheer by singing Carols around the Christmas Tree. 💙 It was brilliant to be joined by so many of our patients and staff members. ✨

Dr Siobhra O’Sullivan, Consultation Radiation Oncologist, recently spoke to Newstalk’s Pat Kenny about the new RapidARC Dynamic (RAD) cancer treatment.

Beacon Hospital is delighted to be the first in Ireland and the UK (and only the 5th in Europe!) to use this incredible new technology with our Varian Truebeam to treat cancer.

RAD has a number of advantages over current radiotherapy treatment delivery. It allows for more complex computer modelling of the radiation dose distribution to the tumour, reducing the dose to surrounding healthy tissue and giving the ability to increase the dose to the tumour.

Combined with the HyperSight technology on the Varian Truebeam, there is more precise treatment delivery to the tumour.

Beacon Hospital are the first hospital in Ireland and the UK to have delivered radiotherapy treatment with the new RapidArc Dynamic technology from Varian.

RapidArc Dynamic (RAD) is a new planning and treatment technology which reduces the impact to healthy tissue thus reducing side effects. Varian released this technology earlier in 2025 and Beacon Hospital is the first hospital in Ireland to have RAD technology with our Varian Truebeam.

RAD has a number of advantages over current radiotherapy treatment delivery. RAD allows for more complex computer modelling of the radiation dose distribution to the tumour, which reduces the dose to surrounding healthy tissue and gives the ability to increase the dose to the tumour. The improved treatment delivery technique offers greater efficiency and can deliver treatment plans in minutes as opposed to hours with previous older technology. A reduced treatment time also reduces the chance of the patient moving, and so combined with the HyperSight technology on the Varian Truebeam, there is more precise treatment delivery to the tumour.

In addition to being the first in Ireland and the UK use this technology, Beacon Hospital are only the 5th hospital in Europe to do so. We will be working with a consortium of European Centres to maximise the benefit of this technology.

This marks another impactful milestone for our Radiotherapy team as we continuously strive to offer the best-in-class Radiotherapy treatments for our patients.

Congratulations to Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons Mr Maurice Neligan and Mr Philip Brady who, along with Beacon Hospital’s incredible theatre team, carried out their first three VELYS robotic knee replacement surgeries yesterday.

The VELYS robot uses cutting edge precision technology to carry out knee replacement surgeries with unparalleled accuracy. Combined with the ATTUNE Knee System, which works exclusively with the VELYS, the result for patients is a superior outcome with enhanced recovery and quality of life post-surgery.

Beacon Hospital’s continued investment and development of our surgical robotics program currently sees 4 robots in operation in our Theatres. These include the aforementioned VELYS, the DaVince XI, the Mako and the Exclius. Combined, these robots are used to perform surgeries across our knee, hip, spinal, colorectal, gynaecological, thoracic and bariatric surgical disciplines.

How healthy are your lungs? 🫁

Professor Seamus Linnane, Consultant in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine, and Deputy Medical Director at Beacon Hospital, spoke to the Irish Examiner about Lung Health. Prof Linnane explains that lung function peaks around age 25 and slowly declines over time but there is a lot we can do to protect our lungs.

As winter brings a rise in respiratory infections, now is a good time to check in on your lung health.

From monitoring VO2 max on your smartwatch to simple home spirometry, it has never been easier to track your lung capacity. Prof Linnane says regular exercise, breathing-focused activities, vaccinations and stopping smoking, all play a vital role in keeping your lungs strong.

Small steps today can make a big difference to long-term health. 🫁 💙

Today is European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD)!
European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) is an annual public health initiative to raise awareness about the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to public health. EAAD takes places during AMR Awareness Week, which is a global campaign taking place each year from November 18th - 24th, to raise awareness and understanding of AMR.

Today our Antimicrobial Stewardship Team in Beacon Hospital marked the day with an educational stand for staff and patients, to raise awareness around antimicrobial stewardship and resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. AMR is a major public health concern globally. AMR arises when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites lose their responsiveness to antimicrobial agents. This resistance makes antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents ineffective, resulting in infections being more challenging or even impossible to address.

AMR is accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials for treating, controlling and preventing infections. It is so important to only use antibiotics for necessary bacterial infections and to take as prescribed by your doctor. 💙

We are delighted to share that our Housekeeping Team has once again achieved the Platinum CAP Award, for the third year in a row! 🎉

The Platinum CAP Award is the highest recognition in the programme and involves continual advancement over the course of successive assessments. The Platinum assessment is a rigorous process that occurs unannounced at any point in a 12-month period.

Securing this award three years consecutively demonstrates not only our team’s ability to meet the highest standard, but also their continued commitment to improving processes, maintaining rigorous infection-prevention practices and providing a safe and welcoming environment for all patients, visitors and staff.

Congratulations to our exceptional Housekeeping colleagues and to our partners at Neylon’s Facility Management on this incredible achievement! 💙

Today we were delighted to celebrate both our Radiotherapy and Radiology teams as we marked two important events, the International Day of Medical Physics on 7th November and the International Day of Radiology on 8th November. 🎉

These days give us the opportunity to recognise the vital role our Radiology and Radiotherapy departments play in patient diagnosis, treatment and care.

The International Day of Medical Physics is celebrated on 7th November in honour of Marie Curie’s birthday. Born in 1867, Marie Curie’s pioneering research on radioactivity laid the foundations for modern medical physics. 💙

World Radiography Day is celebrated on 8th November as it marks Wilhelm Roentgen’s discovery of X-rays in 1895. This was a breakthrough that transformed medical imaging and continues to support earlier detection, fewer surgeries and improved outcomes for patients.

Today’s celebration was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the expertise, dedication and teamwork of our Radiology and Radiotherapy colleagues. Thank you to both teams for the exceptional care you provide every day. 💙
