Beacon Hospital prides itself on its comprehensive infection prevention control and surveillance programme, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to being the highest-quality and safest provider of medical and surgical care. The Beacon Centre for Orthopaedics comprises Ireland’s largest independent Orthopaedic Group Practice, where our 17 Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons cover all aspect of Orthopaedic care in one unit. Beacon Hospital's Cancer Centre offers patients the latest advances in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment, with an unparalleled range of treatment options, including diagnostic testing, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy in one convenient location. Beacon Hospital Women’s Centre, which encompasses the full spectrum of women’s gynaecological care, utilises minimally invasive procedures whenever possible. Our Breast Care Centre also provides same-day mammography results and treatment in a warm, comforting environment. Treatment facilities in Beacon Hospital include 8 operating theatres with dedicated rooms for Neurosurgery, Urology, Cardiac, General, Orthopaedic and Ophthalmic Surgery. Beacon Hospital has 8 ICU beds and 6 CCU beds all individually capable of isolating any patient. Each patient has their own room, with glass front, so nurses see everything, but they are allowed a certain degree of privacy with their loved ones at this crucial time. It also helps minimise infection - a very pertinent issue in healthcare today. The nursing philosophy in Beacon Hospital is a collaborative approach where compassion and care are delivered through touch, a kind act, through competent clinical interventions or through listening and seeking to understand the others experience. Beacon Hospital has satellite locations in Mullingar and Limerick. The benefit for patients is that they can access certain specialties locally, thereby minimising travel and any inconvenience. If a procedure is required this is carried out in Sandyford, and resulting follow up takes place back in their own community. For more information please visit our website. Suncreen Safety - Check your expiration dates!

The promises of sunshine will have us all running to that cupboard where our flipflops, picnic blankets and sunscreen are stored. One thing to remember, sunscreen does expire! If you have had yours in the cupboard since last summer, chances are it is time to replace it to ensure your skin is adequately protected.

As well as an expiration date, your sunscreen should have a symbol with a number followed by the letter ‘m’ inside it. This indicates how long the product lasts once it has been opened. For example in the picture below, this would indicate that once opened, the product is good to use for up to 12 months.

Top Tip: The first time you open a new sunscreen, use a sharpie or permanent marker to write the date on the tube. This way, you will know exactly when it should be replaced!

With the upcoming weekend set to be a scorcher (waheeey!!), we thought it was an important time to send out a reminder about keeping yourself, and any smallies, safe in the sunshine.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in Ireland. The good news, there are lots of precautions we can take to help significantly reduce our chances of being impacted by it. These tips include:

Ireland’s SunSmart campaign gives us incredible tips on how to stay safe while enjoying the sun.

Cover up: using a light layer over arms and legs and a collared t-shirt will reduce the amount of skin exposed to the sun.

Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum product that protects from UVA and UVB rays. We recommend using factor 50+. Apply 20 minutes prior to going outside and reapply every 2 hours. (More often if swimming or sweating).

Hat: Use a wide brimmed hat to protect your face, neck and ears.

Shade: UV rays are strongest between 11am and 3pm. Stay in shaded areas during this time. You can still enjoy the heat and fresh air, but do so safely from under the shade of a parasol, tree or other!

Sunglasses: Our eyes can also suffer from the effects of the sun. To protect your peepers, we recommend a pair of sunglasses.

Remember, there is no such thing as a ‘healthy tan’. Keep your skin safe by protecting it from harmful rays. If you do have any concerns about your skin, get it checked with your GP who can refer you on to a specialist if required.

Enjoy the weekend sun everybody! 😎

Today we are celebrating International Nurses Day at Beacon Hospital! 💙
It is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible role our nurses play every single day across the hospital.

As part of the celebrations, staff enjoyed a range of activities and treats throughout the day, including our wellness zone with hand massages, coffee, acai bowls, a lunchtime DJ and more. We also had a special Gratitude Wall where colleagues and patients could leave messages of appreciation for our nursing team.

It was fantastic to see staff from across the hospital come together to celebrate our Nursing Team.

To all of our amazing nurses, thank you for always going above and beyond for each and every one of our patients. We are incredibly proud of our nursing team.

Happy International Nurses Day from all of us at Beacon Hospital 💕

We’re delighted to announce the official opening of our new Rheumatology Centre, the largest and most comprehensive private rheumatology service of its kind in Ireland. 💙
The purpose-built centre has been designed to deliver specialist, patient-centred care for individuals living with autoimmune, inflammatory, degenerative and musculoskeletal conditions. Located within the Beacon Hospital campus, it brings together expert clinical care, advanced diagnostics and specialist therapies in one integrated setting.

The service is led by a team of seven Consultant Rheumatologists, supported by dedicated specialist nursing and allied health professionals.

Patients will have access to a wide range of services on-site, including advanced imaging such as ultrasound, MRI, CT, X-ray and DEXA scanning, alongside a dedicated five-chair infusion suite for the delivery of specialist therapies. Multidisciplinary collaboration is central to the Rheumatology service, with close links across orthopaedics, dermatology, nephrology, pulmonology and cardiology, as well as physiotherapy, rehabilitation and pain management supports.

At a time when demand for rheumatology services continues to grow, this new centre reflects Beacon Hospital’s ongoing investment in specialist services, ensuring patients can access timely, coordinated and high-quality care in one location.

A special thanks and congratulations to all the team involved, there has been a huge amount of work behind the scenes to get to this milestone moment! 👏 🎉
