Back from the 3rd European Orthopaedic & Sports Acupuncture Congress 🇪🇸

The incredible power of MTrPs and motor points were true game changers for my clinical practice, just as Dr. Richard Hazel promised on his excellent Acupuncturist Outsider Podcast when I listened to it three years ago. It spun my work down a path that's still very much untrodden, but soon, every therapist will want to travel it to get outstanding results for their patients.

I am grateful for world-class speakers, .sports.acupuncturist and for sharing new techniques, great food, and even better company. 🙏

Special thanks to my friend Xavier from for the invite and the great laughs along the way.

Can I be straight up with you? Getting someone out of pain is the easy part; the sheer disbelief on someone's face when you resolve their impossible injury in sometimes 2mins of therapy is priceless and very rewarding for me. And I'm talking about nearly every pain imaginable you might experience in your body save for those rare moments in life where you say: "Get me to A&E!". Figuring out why they ended up injured in the first place can be the real challenge.

Treating Myofascial Trigger Points and Motorpoints can solve nearly every type of pain I see in the clinic. If Trigger Points are in a muscle then that muscle is dysfunctional. It can't fully contract or lenghten, it pulls on nerves and causes joint and tendon pain. It's not rocket science, and I'm baffled why other therapies and Medical professionals don't consider them in their work. They would have deeply grateful patients and an immense sense of job satisfaction.

And let me be blunt, strength work and stretching is not the answer. That thinking has a time and place, and we ought to certainly do that stuff when our tissue is fully functional to make us more resilient to forces in the future.

The figuring out part of why pain occurred in the first place can be the real challenge. Was it obvious trauma? Was it a mistep that we didn't think anything of at the time? Were we making inappropriate shapes while absorbing forces in our sport or hobbies. And how do we prevent these as best we can from occurring again? That's the interesting question!

Three Days, 30 Hours, and a Whole Lot of Needles 🧠💥✨

Just wrapped up an incredible three-day deep dive into Integrative Acupuncture, and let’s just say—I may never look at pain the same way again! My understanding of Myofascial Trigger Points has levelled up as well as my understanding of neurological disorders and working directly with nerves, which is no longer something... to be nervous about! Caught up with some old friends and worked with my Swiss buddy Markus who was an invaluable guide in many ways!

🚀 Day 1: We kicked off with neuro-stimulation for the upper extremity. Turns out, acupuncture isn't just about poking people with needles—it's about hijacking the nervous system (for good!) to reset and optimize function. I also got my mind blown by the neurological mechanisms of acupuncture—turns out, science is finally catching up with what ancient practitioners figured out 2,500 years ago!

💪 Day 2: Treatment protocols for some of the trickiest upper limb conditions—De Quervain’s, tennis/golfer’s elbow, triceps tendinosis, bicipital tendinitis, rotator cuff syndrome, and frozen shoulder. I’ve got some powerful new tricks to add to my current treatment protocols. The S.M.A.R.T. guideline gave us a step-by-step East-meets-West approach to integrating acupuncture with modern rehab—because balance is everything!

🧠 Day 3: We moved up to the neck and head, tackling tension headaches, migraines, cluster headaches, neuropathic pain, trigeminal neuralgia, Bell’s palsy, and cervicalgia. Needles vs. pain? Needles win!

What blows my mind is that over 80% of acupuncture points map directly to key nerve branches or trunks. We literally watched cadaver dissections prove that ancient acupuncture texts align perfectly with our modern understanding of the nervous system. HOW did they know that back then?!

Beyond the learning, I met amazing health professionals from around the world, each with their own insights into resolving pain and dysfunction. It’s incredible how many different approaches can all lead to the same goal: helping people heal.

Going into the Christmas break unbeaten in the league. Great group of young players coming through, and we had a very exciting match yesterday against a very strong Suttonians HC team. Coming out with the win 5 seconds from the final whistle to finish 2-1!

Great shots by my father, Pat, who is just shy of 84 years young, this week .kehoe

🏆 Minor cup final champions! 🏆

We secured a 2-0 victory against Monkstown Hockey Club. It was an incredibly enjoyable game with a fantastic group of lads who left it all on the pitch. A perfect way to end the season with the Glens , photos by .kehoe

I wore the mountain running shoes on the pitch (spot my IMRA timing tag!) but time to take them back out on the mountains for the summer ahead@

Really enjoyed my time on the microphone yesterday in Cycle Superstore, Tallaght in front of a full house, we even ran out of chairs!

I shed light on what Triggerpoints are in your muscles and how they are responsible for the majority of the pain I see here in the clinic. We showed the audience how to find and release their own trigger points to begin treating their own pain.

If your company or club are interested in a similar talk or workshop feel free to reach out to me at info@jktherapy.ie

As an athlete for over 30 years I've tried every Therapy under the sun and as someone who works with pain I've taken professional qualifications in many different types of therapy. The common thread I've come across in ALL these therapies is the power of Trigger Points and the importance of removing them from muscles to overcome nearly every type of injury.

It gives me great pleasure to share what I've learned over the last decade with an audience in on Wed 20th March at 7:00pm for a free workshop where I'll teach you my favourite method of finding and releasing your own Triggerpoints to keep you on the road with your sport and training.

Link in Bio. Hope you can make it!

Another great battle on Irelands highest peak Carrauntoohil.

Gave all I had on the day grinding out the climb and descended very well where I duked it out with old and new rivals to finish 7th. Weather was great and lots of support along the route.

It's always a privilege for my body to be able to take on these great challenges on special mountains.

🎉100 RACES AND COUNTING! 🙌🏼

Finally earned the coveted 100 races t-shirt with

When I took on an unknown and frankly obscure sport back in 2007 (mountain running) I was hockey fit but quickly realised I wasn't running fit! See other photo of me dying a death!

I was 'carrying timber', wore too many clothes, ate a massive carvery lunch... for energy... which gave me a stitch and made so many other rookie mistakes

There is a honeymoon phase when you start running and especially mountain running. I went from doing as many races as I could possibly fit into a season to finally working with a coach and being more shrewd and picky about the races so I could toe the start line in the best possible shape. And for that reason that it took me 16 years to rack up the 100 races to earn the coveted 100 race t-shirt. However the majority of those races were 'quality' races.

Joining IMRA quickly changed the trajectory of my life and friendships and most importantly I started taking an interest in my own body and health. So much so I now work in a sporting oriented career and get to meet some of the most interesting people in a daily basis.

When I meet a client, who is maybe just starting out on their own sporting journey, I try to do what I wished someone would have done for me back in 2007. Cut through the B.S., confront them with some hard facts, show them a clear path for longevity, enjoyment and get them back doing what they love asap. Empower them and make them as independent as they can be.

Last night's Prince Williams Seat race in the Wicklow mountains was a blast, and I even finished 12th place, progressing from 24th last week! 🥳 Slowly but surely getting back into the saddle after a 2-year break from mountain running. 🌄

Back on the pitch regularly now after a break of 12 years where I left the sport to train 7-10 times a week for mountain running which changed my life.

Last season after my first return to the pitch I had to lay on my back for two days and had unmerciful aches in muscles I hadn't used intensely in years! Eventually the body has been trained back into relatively good shape and I'm still enjoying running when I can get the time.

What I love about running is that you're reliant wholy on yourself and only you can do the work. You fully own the wins and PB's as well as the underperformances and injuries. With a team you all must work together and anyone who doesn't pulls the rest of the team down, that's why team sports are such emotional environments. I've missed the team environment and the simple act of play and banter.

I don't have many pictures of myself playing hockey over the last 30 years so I was delighted when my dad .kehoe turned up to catch the action against Pembroke Wanderers where we had a great 3-0 victory. All the lads on the team in thought he did an amazing job catching them in some great action shots.
