Wednesday 17th September is Mouth Cancer Awareness Day.
Today marks the 17th annual Mouth Cancer Awareness Day, and we at DDUH are proud to stand alongside patients, clinicians, and advocates in recognising the progress made in supporting those affected by mouth, head and neck cancers (MHN).

Over the past seventeen years, the evolution of this patient group has been remarkable. DDUH, in collaboration with the MHN Cancer Awareness Ireland Group, has played a pivotal role in advancing awareness, education, and care pathways for MHNC patients.

One of our proudest achievements remains the successful incorporation of dental professionals and oral healthcare into the National Cancer Strategy 2016–2026—an essential step in ensuring holistic, multidisciplinary cancer care.

There is a head and neck cancer information stand in place at the DDUH foyer provided by our undergraduate dental hygiene students today Wednesday 17th September. We encourage staff and members of the public to visit the stand.

This evening, the Irish Dental Association (IDA) will host an online webinar featuring Professor Mike Lewis, Emeritus Professor of Oral Medicine and member of the Mouth Cancer Foundation.

His talk, “Mouth Cancer – Early Detection Saves Lives” will highlight the critical importance of timely diagnosis and intervention.

We encourage all dental professionals, students, and members of the public to engage with today’s events and continue to champion awareness. Together, we can make a lasting impact.

Sviatlana Anisichuk was presented with an Award for Excellence in Dental Education in the Early Career category on 20th August 2025 in Dublin.

The Excellence in Dental Education Award provides international recognition of the contributions made by dental educators in the early stages of their careers, from the highly prestigious platform of ADEE.

On Saturday, April 26, 2025, many of Trinity College Dublin's Dental Science students had the great privilege to participate in Teddy Bear Hospital (TBH). TBH is an annual, full-day event coordinated and hosted by Trinity College Dublin's Paediatric Society, whereby young school children are able to interact with students studying various health science professions, such as medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, and dentistry.

TBH provides children with a safe space to learn about proper oral hygiene techniques and other responsibilities of dentists, and by cultivating an enriching environment full of educational diagrams, colouring sheets, toothbrushes, toy sets of teeth, a giant dinosaur with braces, and of course friendly smiles, aims to lessen fear of dentists for children in the future.

A special thanks to TCD's Dental Science Students who participated and brought excitement, smiles, and education to all the children who attended and ensured that the dental table was immensely memorable, including: Michelle De Deyn, Amesha Muruletharan, Rachel Tang, Olivia Ngo, Zoe Quinlan, Etaine Leydon, Iman Khan, Alisa Vipulakom, Stella Sta Maria, Grace Feighan, Mohammed Abdo, and Rita Bishara.

Congratulations to all of our auditors who conducted audits in the past year and presented their findings to colleagues at the DDUH Clinical Audit Presentation Afternoon on Thursday 1 May.

Thank you to the judges Prof. Padraic Fallon, Dr Mary Kate Kearney and Ms Carol MacArthur for taking the time to support our NCHD’s.

Best Overall Audit - Dr Peter Suresh and Dr Kate Sullivan, Supervisor: Dr Grace Kelly - An audit of the quality of referral letters received by the Head and Neck Dental Oncology Service in Dublin Dental University Hospital.

Best Pure Audit - Dr Honorata Julia Juga and Dr Julia Durka, Supervisor: Dr Angus Burns - Audit of Patient Satisfaction with Ongoing Orthodontic Treatment at DDUH in Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Consultant/HO Clinics over a one month period.

Most Innovative Audit - Dr Clíodhna Heenan and Dr Sinéad Gaffney, Supervisor: Mr Dermot Pierce - An audit of success rates of implants placed in head and neck radiation oncology patients.

A big thank you was also given to Dr Gerry Cleary, President of the Dental Council, whose term will end later this year. Dr Cleary has always been a great advocate of audit within the DDUH and is always happy to be a judge at the presentation display. Here he is pictured on the evening with Dr Angus Burns, Chair of the Clinical Audit Committee and the judges.

Delighted to report that Kamila Marcinczak, Louis Madden and Peter Suresh were all 'highly commended' as runners up in their relative categories following their poster presentations at the BAOS Annual Scientific Conference last week. This is a huge achievement given the extremely high standard of competition, including those in specialty training, specialist and consultant roles.
