NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION? HOW TO MAKE CHANGE EASIER!
BEARING IN MIND each one of us continually constructs our own ‘reality’, let’s take a moment to consider something many of us spend a lot of time and effort trying in vain to avoid – Change.
It’s beyond our capacity to imagine the amount of change that has taken place throughout our bodies, our country, our planet and solar system just in the moment it takes to say the word!
Change.
Isn’t it always time to?
You’ve probably already noticed the strange and ineffective ways in which some people respond to change. Since it’ll take time, work and effort to embrace change or resist change, they’re going to spend time either way.
Question is: What is your investment best spent on?
What returns the biggest reward? One thing is certain: people want the biggest, shiniest, sincerest reward, wouldn’t you say?
Generally speaking, people (dare I say, including you) do not want change per se. And they don’t want to attend classes, sit through lessons, or training, or get up-skilled, saved or coached either!
GOOD DELIVERY SYSTEMS DELIVER THE GOODS
Would you believe that last year in Ireland there were more than a million drill-bits purchased – and that not one person wanted to buy a drill-bit? If, like me, you did not believe that at first glance, who could blame you? However, it is true. Nobody wanted to buy a drill-bit… what they wanted was a hole in the wall.
Obvious? Yes. Common sense? No. There’s a difference between knowing something as a concept and knowing something as an experience. If you don’t agree, look up the word mango in the dictionary and read it. Then, go eat a fresh, cold, juicy mango. Worlds apart. Like trying to experience a country by looking at its flag!
The drill-bit is just a means to an end – simply a delivery system to achieve that specific outcome. If they could have snapped their fingers and gotten the hole they wanted, do you think they’d have bothered buying a drill-bit? No sir-ee, Bob! as my step-dad might say.
Likewise, you don’t want to spend time sitting in class learning lessons, being trained or coached – you almost surely have better things to be doing (and if not, you might want to look into that)… what you really want is to enjoy the benefits that new learning /evolution / or change brings.
So, asking yourself whether you need saving or stoning or teaching or coaching is not as useful as finding out first what outcome you want to achieve – when you know that, you are ready to have a good old chat with yourself and identify the change you want to make, the new information you want to learn, the different states you’d like to live in more often. If you were 4 or 5 years old, you’d no doubt find it all wonderfully exciting!
It can be argued that we sometimes get to where we want to go before we even know we want to get there. But let’s not. Let’s just agree that the probability of arriving at a destination you knew beforehand is more likely… and maybe even more rewarding.
Perhaps you have already come to realise that it’s far more useful to shift your focus from training, coaching, learning, studying and what have you, and, instead, pay much more attention to what specifically you want to achieve – whether that is ~
being able to sell more – more effortlessly
delivering more winning presentations more often
getting rid of an unwanted behaviour or developing a new one
overcoming a fear or phobia
increasing confidence in a particular area of your life
be communicating more effectively, effortlessly and elegantly!
Some say what you focus on is what you get. Einstein said that your imagination is the preview to your life’s coming attractions. What are you choosing to do with your imagination these days?
If a 30 second television advertisement, watched repeatedly, can influence you to purchase a product, what does watching a 30 minute soap opera repeatedly (like Coronation Street, for example, or Eastenders) do in terms of influencing you to buy into a certain lifestyle? Does art imitate your life? Okay, we won’t call it art – we’ll call it a TV show.
Does your life imitate a TV show? Whose hands are operating the control of your imagination?
If it’s them, throw your TV out and get an aquarium. If it’s you, it's time to stop imagining what you don’t want…flip it!... and start to imagine what you do want… what it looks like, sounds like, feels like.
Your brain is a powerful tool – and that tool is in your hands. So, remember to wash your hands. And also that when you are driving and you put your foot on the brakes – your life is in your foot’s hands.
Since our problems have been our own creation, sang George Harrison, they also can be overcome. Imagine that! No, scratch that – imagine whatever you like, whatever you want.
As Chancy Gardener said: Life is a state of mind!
Change your mind – change your reality.
