ICC Theory Refresher Day

Course starts at 09:00 in the clubhouse — arrive by 08:30 to park, get settled, and enrol. Wrap-up is around 16:30.

This is a focused revision session designed for experienced sailors who want to brush up on key knowledge (Collision Regs, buoyage, etc.) ahead of the theory exam — all covered on the day.

⚠️ Not a beginner course: If you’re not already at Day Skipper level, consider a full course before attending.

📌 Note: This session covers the theory exam only. To obtain your ICC, you’ll also need to complete a practical assessment (approx. €100).

An outstanding performance by the Celtic Boys on Wednesday 18th March saw them take away first prize in the fortnightly quiz, winning by seven clear points. It was not just that they knew their popular and unpopular music, they were ahead of the competition on all topics. The performance was all the better in that they say off former champions and champions-elect Wizard as well as reigning champions, the Corner Boys. Pretenders T.B.M. weakened into fourth, with a teamtastic display by Teamtastic in fifth.

Overall, the leaderboard (available on the club noticeboard) shows that Wizard have an insurmountable lead in the Brains of the Bay with only one round remaining. T.B.M. are in second with Celtic Boys moving up into third.

The next and final quiz of the season will take place on Wednesday 1st April (no joke!). This is a dinner-quiz, with dinner at 7.00 for 7.30, and the quiz starting at 8pm…..sharp! The Commodore will be in attendance to award the prizes and trophy on the night. Teams attending for dinner are asked to left the club know in advance so that they can prepare for the numbers.

Brilliant results for the club two J80s racing the DBSC Spring chicken series.

The U25 team sailing on SeaJade finished on a high snatching 2nd overall a mere point of the winning team counting 3 top 10 in the 5 races series. Skipper Nicola Ferguson, Co Skipper Peter Kenny and their team of young guns are becoming more and more competitive amongst the other J80s of the waterfront clubs and are now looking forward to a brillaint summer of Dublin bay racing.

The "Women on the water" coached boat enjoyed a great series too winning race 3 (a coastal race around the Mugglins) and completing their challenge in 6th position overall, a massive personal best for the team and Skipper Greta Phelan. Progress has been stellar under the guidance of Head coach Thomas Chaix with 3 ladies taking turn at the helm over the course of the series and the full team gaining valuable insight on how to master the club J80 JayZ...

Quiz update

As promised, spring has arrived and the flowers bloomed at the quiz on Wednesday, 4th March. For one bed of roses, namely Stars of the Sea, this nearly resulted in a first win of the season, but their green fingers could not get them all the way to the flower show and they were pipped on the line by the denizens of Gardeners’ World that are Enchantress. This was Enchantress’s second win of the series and puts them in 4th place overall in the league table. T.B.M. won some valuable points by coming 3rd, ahead of Wizard, Chancellors, and the Celtic Boys. Flying starts by Tango and Celtic Warriors could not be maintained, and F-15 maintained their improved form.

There are only two quizzes left this season – 18 March and 1 April (final dinner). Competition for the overall Brains of the Bay title is still strong, with Wizard holding a lead over T.B.M. that, adjusted for discards, is closer than it seems. A good showing by T.B.M. in the home straight could bring the competition down to the wire, although a win for Wizard in either of the last two quizzes would probably seal the deal. There is also a tight competition for third between Celtic Boys and Enchantress. Stars of the Sea move up to 8th. The overall leaderboard is available on the club noticeboard.

The next quiz is on Wednesday 18th March at 8pm sharp! Two notable events that will take place between then and now are the races at Prestbury Park and St. Patrick’s Day (not to mention World War III). I wonder if any of those will feature in the questions…
