The discs in the spine, known as intervertebral discs, are made up of two main parts, both composed of specialized connective tissues. These discs play a crucial role in allowing the spine to remain flexible and resilient, while also distributing loads generated by body movement and weight.
Structurally, spinal discs consist primarily of water, collagen, and proteoglycans. They are organized into a gel-like center (the nucleus pulposus) surrounded by a tough, fibrous ring (the annulus fibrosus).
There are around ten different types of collagen found in intervertebral discs. Notably, Type III collagen helps support structural integrity and plays a role in tissue healing. When combined with proper hydration, collagen supplementation may support recovery from back pain, particularly when related to disc degeneration.
