Stay hydrated!

While fibre plays an important role in keeping things moving, water too is a huge component to help avoid constipation. Standard guidelines recommend drinking around 2 litres of water per day. However, if you exercise frequently or live in a warm climate this need may go up.

But while it’s important to get adequate water intake daily, be careful not to drink too much with meals. This can actually have a negative effect on digestion by diluting the stomach acid and preventing it from doing its job which then also affects the other stages that follow.

Eat real food!

It might seem obvious but eating real, whole food that is as close to nature as possible is key to good digestion. This section and the idea of eating real food has two levels.

At a general level, the aim is to remove processed food (meaning essentially anything with more than 5 ingredients) from your diet in favour of whole, natural foods (i.e. what you find around the perimeter of the grocery store). The reasoning behind this is very straight forward; it’s food we are designed to eat and recognise meaning it’s ideal for our digestive system to handle. On the other hand, processed foods contain multiple extra ingredients and processing which can be taxing on our body and contribute to unexplained or repeated digestive issues.

At the more specific level, certain foods are known as potentially irritating when someone has a compromised gut. For example, people often find they are intolerant to ingredients like eggs, gluten, dairy and nuts. There’s a multitude of diets that you can try which all fall under the category of an elimination diet – paleo, SCD, FODMAP, keto, gluten free etc. No one diet works better than the other so it’s about finding an approach you feel best fits your lifestyle. But the idea behind an elimination diet is that it’s done for a short period of time, usually 30-90 days, after which, foods that were previously avoided are slowly introduced back into the diet. The break from these potentially irritable foods allows the gut to repair and restore.

Understanding exactly what terms like ‘accreditation’ and ‘award’ mean can be confusing. So the following should help you decide which college and study programme might be your best choice.

Ideally, both the college AND the course are accredited by an independent awarding body that is itself recognised by an official accrediting regulator.

The independent awarding body approves and monitors the curriculum and assessment standards, and routinely audits students’ work. This way you can be assured that the content you are learning is up to date and of the highest standard.

Many colleges offer their own ‘homemade’ diplomas, but we find that most learners prefer an award overseen by a respected external accrediting body.

At IINH we work with two independent accrediting bodies:

🧑‍🎓 Pearson International – for our BTEC Diploma in Professional Nutrition & Health Coaching. Pearson (BTEC), the world’s largest awarding body for education.

🧑‍🎓 Crossfield’s Institute UK – for our Diploma in Nutritional Science and Therapeutics (Nutritional Therapy). Ofqual-regulated and awarded by CFI awarding

If you have any questions about accreditations or course levels, please reach out to our team and we can help to clarify any confusing messaging you may see while researching courses, simply email admissions@iinh.net or book a call https://calendly.com/iinh/

Chew your food!

You might not realise but there’s a lot of pieces to your overall digestive health. In fact, eating food is only one small step. Your body then has to initiate several processes, both mechanical and chemical, to ensure that food is fully broken down, digested, assimilated and key nutrients absorbed. Chewing falls into the mechanical element of digestion and is a key early step.

Poor chewing has been linked to poor absorption of nutrients. As a start, chewing food helps to produce saliva which begins the process of chemical digestion. Yep, in fact, carbohydrates and fats begin their digestion in the mouth! Chewing also helps to break down food into smaller units to create a broad surface area for enzymes to coat. This slows down the movement of food through the gastrointestinal tract and makes further digestive processes more efficient.

Ideally, aim to chew every bite of food from 20-50 times, putting down your fork and knife as you do so. Give it a try!

Cancer Coaching for Health Coaches is an advanced specialist programme designed for graduates of our Nutrition and Health Coaching and Nutritional Therapy Diplomas who wish to deepen their competence in this area.

A diagnosis of cancer can affect every aspect of a person’s life. Alongside physical treatment, individuals often face uncertainty, fear, grief and questions about identity, meaning and the future.

During this difficult time, Health Coaches can make all the difference, gently supporting people through the shock and trauma of diagnosis and onwards, to cope positively with the challenges they may face.

Led by Dr Rosy Daniel, an experienced practitioner and educator in integrative cancer care, this course provides structured training in how to coach safely, ethically and compassionately when working with clients affected by cancer.

The course begins on May 9th and there are limited spaces remaining. For full details of the course, please see provided emails and IINH Alumni Hub or graduates contact info@iinh.net

This recipe is all about letting good ingredients speak for themselves; sun-kissed tomatoes, juicy olives, salty capers and creamy tangy feta that turns golden and gooey in the oven. It’s just begging to be mopped up with smoky char-grilled sourdough or a crusty loaf. Best of all, it’s thrown together in minutes and on the table in twenty minutes. A perfect dish to wow your family and friends - the ultimate alfresco meal.
