Weaning.ie

Weaning.ie Qualified, Experienced, Paediatric Dietitian and Mum to three young children, helping parents from f Why? How we eat can be as important as what we eat.

I’m Cathy, a Mum of 3 with over 15 years experience in CHI @ Temple Street. As a senior Paediatric Dietitian I know how valuable it is to introduce families to the nurturing foundations of food before any problems begin. MY MOTIVATION:
My purpose is to support parents as they transition through the phases and stages of feeding their family. As a senior Paediatric Dietitian my work is dedicated to eduacting, empowering and enabling parents to feed their children what they need without unnecessary cost, time, tantrums or guilt. Because weaning is the foundation of nurturing a lifelong positive relationship with food. I created weaning.ie to allow all parents access to evidenced based essentials on how to feed your babies, toddlers and families to minimise illness, concern, battles and overwhelm. This isn’t about should or shouldn’t it’s about creating a positive lifelong relationship with food, as a family. Working with me is not about the weight of our children, it’s about reducing the weight of motherhood on our shoulders to get it right 100% of the time. Weaning is chapter one. A lifelong relationship with food is the full story. I provide Weaning and Toddler Masterclasses and webinars. I am also available for 1:1 Consultations. I’ve written a blog post on why I do what I do, you can grab it here. I share lots of free stuff in my newsletter, The Highchair - you can sign up here. MY BACKGROUND:
On completing my B.Sc at NUIG in 2004, I graduated with an M.Sc Dietetics from Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. I have been working with families just like yours since 2008. I have experience in many different areas of childhood nutrition including weaning, feeding toddlers, fussy eating, allergies, weight management, Metabolic Disorders and Type 1 Diabetes. I am a member of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute and registered with CORU and that means I am covered by health insurance.

Not all fibre is the same! There are different types — soluble, insoluble, and resistant starch.

Soluble fibre (e.g. in oats, fruit) dissolves in water and can help with digestion.

Insoluble fibre (e.g. in wholegrains, nuts) adds bulk and helps intestinal movement.

Resistant starch (e.g. in cooled potatoes, unripe bananas, pulses) is fermented by gut bugs.

By including a mix of these, children’s guts are supported more fully.

‼️Remember to ALWAYS supervise your child when they are eating. It is important for them to be sitting up right in their usual chair.

Babies and young children are still learning how to chew and manage different foods and textures in their mouth.

Some foods pose a higher choking risk than others.

It is important that young children avoid high risk choking foods such as:

🔴popcorn

🔴hard sweets/lollies

🔴chewing gum

🔴marshmallows

‼️Always ensure that the following foods are correctly prepared and served appropriately depending on your baby/child’s age:

Nuts - remember nut butters can be very gloppy so be sure to thin it out.

🔺Sausages - slice appropriately

🔺Peas - mash

🔺Cherry tomatoes - quarter

🔺Grapes - ALWAYS quarter

🔺Blueberries - squeeze/flatten

These are only a few examples of foods that we need to be aware of!

As we enter the last month of the summer holidays, it can be good to have school lunches on our radar. Especially for children starting school or preschool for the first time. It can be hard to decide what we should put into the lunchbox. It's never to early to prepare for school.

Simplify the lunch box and the contents of said lunch box! Lunch boxes with 10 different compartments are not necessary and can be a little overwhelming for some children (and parents!). Ensure your child can open and close their own lunch box and drink.

I suggest building your child’s lunch box in a similar way to their meals by including;
🍞Carbohydrates - bagel/bread/ pitta/pasta/wrap
🧀Protein - cheese/houmous/egg/meat
🍓Fresh food (fruit and veg) - strawberries/cucumber/apple/peppers/
bananas/oranges/grapes/kiwi/carrot
🍪Occasionally I add in a flapjack or a plain fairy cake
💧A bottle of water

Remember not every day needs to be perfect. Once you’ve done that, you’ve done your bit and move on. It doesn’t need to be worthy of an Instagram picture. The lunchbox is only one meal in the day. I choose foods that are quick to prepare and easy to eat. Less is more, there is no point knowingly contributing to food waste. In my experience anything that smells doesn’t work for older children, so keep it simple. If lunch isn’t eaten there is always the option of an afterschool snack.

Follow your schools healthy eating policy. Check for policy re allergen’s/ nut butters. Apart from that keep it simple. It won’t all be eaten all of the time, there is no need to complicate things in the hope of it being eaten. Provide the main foods groups and leave it at that. You provide, they decide.

What foods do you like to include in your child's lunchbox?
