This hack has gone viral on social media and recommends picking a get up time & counting back in 4 (or 5) 90 minute cycles to determine bedtime. This enables us to wake refreshed from REM sleep.

Now here are the real FACTS.

🔬First of all, this method is unscientific & not evidence based.

✅It’s correct to say we sleep in cycles of approximately 90 minutes. The most important word here being APPROXIMATELY!

🧍‍♀️🧍🧍‍♂️Each person is different and so are the length of our sleep cycles.

🧠You can’t predict or know the exact length of your sleep cycles (unless it’s monitored by EEG).

⏰There are variations from night to night. Lots of things can influence sleep cycles (e.g. medication, alcohol, how we slept the previous night).

🤔You can’t dictate when you feel sleepy, sleep is an involuntary process.

😴 We tend to feel groggy if we wake from deep sleep. Majority of deep sleep occurs within the first third of the sleep period. If you have normal sleep architecture you shouldn’t be getting deep sleep towards the end of the sleep period so there’s little chance of waking from it!

🏥 Sleep problems can start when people become more focused on their sleep.

⚠️ So conclusion is to stay well clear of anyone who is advising you of this method.
