With the promising news of the Fair Deal scheme funds being made available to support a loved one in their home, reform of the profession of 'Carers' is needed. Carers are a critical resource in providing homecare to our ageing population. Without them, the option of homecare is significantly reduced. They need to be rewarded fairly financially and supported to develop professionally. Current practices are outdated and simply not sustainable.

Great initiative from Deloitte in recognition of the essential role of Family Carers. Initiatives like this need to become the norm in the workplace given the huge dependency of the healthcare system on families. In Ireland alone, the cost of the State providing the same level of care as that provided by Family Carers is estimated to be between €2.5 billion and €4 billion annually.

Professional-services firm Deloitte will offer up to 16 weeks of fully paid leave for a wide range of caregiving, including maternity and paternity leave, eldercare and aid for other sick family members or partners.
