Learning to isolate your legs in standing poses without the assistance of your arms or hands is a worthwhile intention for everyone in yoga. Take this as your cue. I hope you get some benefit out of this video (link in stories). It ends with a juicy reclined hamstring stretch using the yoga wheel. A strap will suffice. Finish with savasana.

P.s.
If you’re practicing along with the video as a healthy uninjured person, you’ll need some prior knowledge of crescent lunges, warrior 1, warrior 2, warrior 3, triangle, extended side angle, camel, cobblers, straddle and seated forward fold (without the fold!). Easy versions and we don’t stay too long in any place. In the video I say it’s a ‘class’ but it’s more like a play-along guide to what felt possible with a broken collarbone on day 4. It’s low on cues and I mostly call out the poses.

While it’s business as usual on one side of the body, I’ve had to accommodate odd adjustments to get a feeling ‘as if” I’m in a particular pose on the other side. As in the case of supported Ardha Chandrasana, I’m really doing something else altogether. These ‘accommodations’ are a new sensation for sure. Being awkward never felt so good.

It really is interesting to explore what movements are possible with a sling.

This short sequence is suitable for healthy & uninjured beginners, or for anyone experienced who is curious and feels like slow mindful movement. I also used a yoga wheel as a prop but it’s not essential. You’ll find the YouTube link in my stories.

Day 2 sharing the experience of moving asymmetrically with a collarbone fracture. A few screen shots of my lower body practice on day 2.

This has been particularly disastrous because I needed my right arm to sew up the fashion collection I designed for my MFA. I had it all lined up and ready to go.

As a yoga teacher, it is interesting to explore what movements are possible with a sling. I think I’ll be a more compassionate yoga teacher when all is healed!

My First Practice after fracturing the clavicle.
Here’s a few screen shots of a video I made 2.5 days after I fractured my right collarbone in several places on Thursday. See stories for link. In case you were wondering how I broke my collarbone, the dog pulled on the lead and in a split second I banged my head on the kerb and now I need help chopping up my food, washing and dressing.

As a yoga teacher this is particularly disastrous but also fairly interesting to explore what movements are possible with a sling. Describing a fractured clavicle is difficult. I’m not sure if the mental aspects of breaking a bone are discussed too much. The fear of a noticeable deformity and the sad fact that one shoulder will be more narrow than the other (which also means I can’t do that very satisfying shoulder blade squeeze I love) brings out my stubborn streak. I got to the acceptance stage pretty fast after I got the tears of self pity out of the way. I’m going to do everything I can to heal to the best of my ability and knowledge.

For my first practice, I moved super slowly and cautiously. I thought it would be interesting for other yoga teachers to follow a daily diary of healing in a semi-practice context. Disclaimer: I’m not recommending this practice to anyone with a broken collar bone unless you seek professional guidance first. This is just a record of my experience. However, this short sequence would be ideal for beginners, or for anyone who needs very slow mindful movement.

People are saying it’s hard to muster up enthusiasm for the dark November days. However, I get a little giddy as the red and gold leaves of October turn into compost. I’ve always found November to be an inspiring and creative time.

In Samhain, darkness dominates light. We keep our internal fires lit by practicing yoga and having a dedicated time and space each week to set our intentions. Spring bulbs are activated in the cold and the dark. Ideas incubate. That is something to be excited about.

NEW BEGINNINGS

In the darkness we can let go of what isn’t working and look forward to renewal and transformation. The roots of life are drawn downwards beneath the earth. What ideas are taking root for you? How will you keep that flame fertilised? Why, yoga off course!

FIRE NEEDS EARTH

This Sunday I’ll be on retreat with so our Sunday class will be prerecorded. In fact, I’m way ahead of myself, I’ve made it already. It’s a Halloween theme and fairly challenging level 2 as well. (See previous post for some Ghoulish poses). I will roll out a slightly easier version of this flow tomorrow evening as I’m covering Yoga 1-2 and restorative yoga for That’s my news. “What is fear – non acceptance of uncertainty. If we accept that uncertainty, it becomes an adventure!” Rumi

***two new classes this week***

The theme of this Friday Evening’s Chill Pill is acceptance. The essence of yin is yielding to what is, accepting where your body is on a given day, and allowing in, even tolerating, uncertainty.

In all yoga, it is best to release your expectations and to accept how your body is on a given day, while playing to your edge. This means allowing your body to unfold into the pose, listening to how much openness is available to you and not trying to force the door open any further, unless the invitation arises. In the stillness of the yin yoga space, there is an invisible dance down into your deep connective tissues. This movement is perceptible to the practitioner and is accessed via a gentle flowing breath. Pushing yourself to where you think the pose should go prematurely is a sign of ego running the show. Depth comes from lingering in the zone of discomfort, neither too comfortable nor painful. It’s a place of not knowing, and staying there as witness which offers yin it’s emotional and mental benefits, along with its physical benefits.

If you’re sitting down tonight to watch the box, keep your eye out for the Sports Ireland and Healthy Ireland TV commercial, released after the six PM news last night. It features yours truly representing yoga and getting back to sport in Ireland.

On that note, thanks to all who returned to Sunday hatha yoga classes this October. I’ve just sent out the recordings for Sunday hatha (yang) and Friday’s Yin class. The Friday evening class was slow, silent and very quiet. There is a thematic relationship between the meditative Friday evening yin class and the yang Sunday class each week.

So, after this lockdown you might be rearing to go, or perhaps like me you’re feeling a little broken and need to honour that. Whatever you need, yin or yang, make it your priority to get moving and to find time for stillness too.

New Friday Evening Chill Pill five week course starting ONLINE tonight!

As much as people are delighted to get back to working in person, it’s an upheaval because the pace can be frantic and new routines need to be re-established.  

Having a peaceful yoga space to check into on a Friday evening is a powerful container to support ones mental, physical, social and emotional health.   It’s a great way to end your week, to get some personal space and to set your weekend off in a positive tone.  

The Friday Evening Chill Pill will be held Online from October 1st – 29th and in person at St Paul’s Parish Centre in Glenageary from 5th November to the 17th December 2021.  

These five x 90 minute classes will incorporate breathwork, yin yoga, restorative poses, yoga nidra and relaxation.  

🛀Suitable for beginners and all levels
🛀Suitable for over 16s and all genders
🛀Ideal to relieve stress and anxiety
🛀Regenerate from exhaustion
🛀Class recording valid for one week
🛀Props available but you may want to bring your own (applies to in person class only).

It’s often been said that the secret to success is 80% showing up. A few week’s ago we had a few hiccups with an interfering cat, a playlist which didn’t stream at my end and I must admit, I was quite exhausted. One thing I always have to remember as a teacher is that the alchemy of yoga is (as a result of) a co-creation between student, teacher and the yoga practice itself. The energy and attitude you bring to the mat has a huge part to play in the experience you have. Obstacles are part of the process. That is not to remove any accountability on my end, but moreover to state that a good class experience is something a student creates for him/her/theirself in collaboration with the teacher and the poses.

I invite you to enjoy a one hour mixed level hatha practice with me tomorrow on Zoom. Our theme is “Trust The Practice”, and only in so far as whatever you feels valid and appropriate within your own body. Trusting yourself is as important an ingredient as the practice of hatha yoga. I look forward to our ‘collaboration’ tomorrow from 10am to 11am.
