With the weather being less than kind to us in Ireland today, I thought I’d highlight ‘Urinary Urgency’ and how, for some, symptoms can be triggered by the weather!

But first just a little background about Urgency………

Who is affected by it!?
Urinary urgency affects both men and women the world over. Children also.

What is it!?
Urinary Urgency is experienced as a urgent, and often frequent, need to pass urine. It may or may not result in the involuntary loss of urine.

What happens to cause this!?
Sometimes the detrusor muscle, contracts too often or in a spasmodic fashion, creating an urgent need to go to the toilet.

But why!? 🤷‍♀️
Often the reasons are unclear

Did you know…..!?
- ☕️ Caffeine & 🍷 alcohol can act as bladder irritants, worsening urgency.
- 😲 Dehydration can concentrate urine, which irritates the bladder.
- 💩 constipation can disturb bladder function too.
- 🤒 Infections and tumours can be responsible and so must always be considered.
- Neurological conditions can play a part also.
- 💊 Some medications can disturb bladder function.

💡 Interestingly, many of us have triggers, such as…..the weather! A nippy cold on the face or neck, a breeze over the sinus region, the sound of running water (rain or taps running), or perhaps feeling trapped from the facilities (can’t get that 🔑 in the door quick enough, or being stick in traffic).

If any of this rings bells with you, consult a Physiotherapist specialising in bladder and bowel care. WE CAN HELP!!! We will consult with you to help you understand why you are experiencing symptoms and to find a way to get past urgency.

Sarah Bevan is available for consultations at Dun Laoghaire Physiotherapy Clinic. No referral needed. Booking essential and can be made at….

Many of the groups participants have been working away on the Pilates recordings from the term to Easter (I can see the YouTube viewings ticking up! 😁). I myself have enjoyed a glass of wine 🍷

But ....... as of next week (19th April) the new term starts. 6 weeks for all abilities.

Monday 10.30am Post Natal Recovery
Monday 7pm Intermediates

Wednesday 7pm Improvers
Wednesday 8pm Intermediates
Thursday 2pm Improvers
Thursday 7.30pm Beginners

😅 No wonder we needed a weeks break!

Mother’s Day......a day that means so much to those with a baby in their arms, a toddler on their knee, or a child, a teen, or older that call them ‘Mum’. But also a really difficult day for so many wanting just that, or wanting to be back there with their own mums.

I hope that whatever your situation you know that you are loved. That you’ve someone to be at ease with and smile with, that you have a listening ear close by, and support if today is a day that feels like a challenge more than a blessing.

It’s International Women’s Day and I’d like to give a big shout out to all the fabulous females of this world!

Today is about realising what we do, what we are capable of doing, and celebrating how far we have come (both personally and as a womanhood together).

I am proud to be Physiotherapist specialising in women’s health, to be a business owner, a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a friend, a shoulder to lean on, and a companion to laugh with. We have some many facets to being us, and we are special because of it.

Together we can be anything and everything!

Happy International Women’s Day! You are you, and you are enough 🥇
