With the weather being less than kind to us in Ireland today, I thought I’d highlight ‘Urinary Urgency’ and how, for some, symptoms can be triggered by the weather!
But first just a little background about Urgency………
Who is affected by it!?
Urinary urgency affects both men and women the world over. Children also.
What is it!?
Urinary Urgency is experienced as a urgent, and often frequent, need to pass urine. It may or may not result in the involuntary loss of urine.
What happens to cause this!?
Sometimes the detrusor muscle, contracts too often or in a spasmodic fashion, creating an urgent need to go to the toilet.
But why!? 🤷♀️
Often the reasons are unclear
Did you know…..!?
- ☕️ Caffeine & 🍷 alcohol can act as bladder irritants, worsening urgency.
- 😲 Dehydration can concentrate urine, which irritates the bladder.
- 💩 constipation can disturb bladder function too.
- 🤒 Infections and tumours can be responsible and so must always be considered.
- Neurological conditions can play a part also.
- 💊 Some medications can disturb bladder function.
💡 Interestingly, many of us have triggers, such as…..the weather! A nippy cold on the face or neck, a breeze over the sinus region, the sound of running water (rain or taps running), or perhaps feeling trapped from the facilities (can’t get that 🔑 in the door quick enough, or being stick in traffic).
If any of this rings bells with you, consult a Physiotherapist specialising in bladder and bowel care. WE CAN HELP!!! We will consult with you to help you understand why you are experiencing symptoms and to find a way to get past urgency.
