Happy New Year — I hope 2026 has begun well for you.

I wanted to share a brief professional update after a quieter period here. In November, I was delighted to receive Full Accreditation with the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). This reflects my ongoing commitment to ethical, high-quality therapeutic practice and continued professional development.

Full IACP accreditation confirms that I meet rigorous standards in accredited training, supervised clinical experience, personal therapy, professional supervision, and Garda Vetting, and that I practise in line with the IACP Code of Ethics and Practice. It also means that therapy session fees may be eligible for reimbursement through many health insurance providers, subject to individual policy terms.

Alongside my clinical work, I am currently completing my Master’s in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy and Trauma Work at Queen’s University Belfast, due to conclude in September. This specialist programme focuses on CBT for depression, anxiety, and trauma-related difficulties and is delivered by internationally recognised clinicians and researchers.

While balancing postgraduate study with clinical practice, I have temporarily reduced my client workload. However, I expect to have limited availability for new clients from the end of March.

Hello everyone,

I'm excited to announce the launch of my newly redesigned website, www.darraghfinlay.ie.

This new website is designed to enhance your experience. With its user-friendly interface, you can now easily book your sessions and access a wealth of information about my services, including Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnosis, and RTT therapy.

I would like to thank Splash Web Design in Killorglin, Co. Kerry, for their professional work designing the new website and Fra Lucchesi Photography Park Street Dundalk for his expert photography and videos.

Whether you prefer online or face-to-face sessions in Dundalk, I am fully committed and prepared to meet your needs.

In addition, I am currently pursuing my Master's in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy at Queens University Belfast. This MSc is offered by a team of internationally recognised trauma researchers and clinicians and is one of the few specialist MSc programs in cognitive behavioural psychotherapy for trauma and related disorders available in Ireland, the UK, and Europe.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that helps individuals address their issues by changing their thought patterns and behaviours. It is primarily used for the treatment of anxiety and depression but may also be beneficial for several other mental and physical health issues.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and check out my website:

Today, I am proud to announce that I have qualified as a Psychotherapist after four years of the BSc in Psychotherapy and Counselling at Middlesex University. This milestone wouldn't have been possible without my husband's steadfast support and encouragement. I am also profoundly grateful to my classmates and lecturers at the Belfast campus for their guidance and camaraderie and to my clinical placement at Northside Counselling Centre Coolock for the invaluable experience. In other news, I will begin my Master's in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in September and work on my new website.

I am available for online or in-person sessions in Dundalk.

The Amygdala Hijack; Anxiety, Fight, Flight and Freeze.
Our Amygdala is a gland in our brain shaped like an almond; it constantly gathers information from our environment to anticipate perceived threats.
When the Amygdala detects a threat, our emotional brain assumes control, and we enter flight, fight, or freeze mode. We no longer possess control. This is useful if, for instance, we are being attacked by a tiger; it is preferable to flee before deciding what to do.
Many people enter this Amygdala Hijack, Flight, Fight or Freeze mode when there is no actual threat—for instance, entering a room full of strangers or giving a presentation at work. When in this state, our minds are not logical, and we frequently make mistakes or say things we would not normally say.
The body produces adrenaline, cortisol, and glucose in response to this perceived threat. Symptoms may include a rapid heartbeat, tightness in the chest, nausea, headaches, a general feeling of discomfort, or a total body shutdown.
Long-term exposure to this stress level can result in various physical ailments, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

How are your stress levels? Do you recognise any of these symptoms in your life? If so, feel free to DM me, call 085 8541152 and email darragh@darraghfinlay.ie 😃
