Can Acupuncture Improve Chronic Spinal Pain?
Any type of symptom that lasts 3 months or longer is considered chronic.
In short yes and it does it extremely well.
The results of the researchers analysis showed, acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for patients with chronic spinal pain.
The researchers looked at research studies from 22 Randomised Controlled Trials involving 2588 patients. These types of trials measure the effectiveness of a treatment. They are recognised as gold standard when it comes to reducing bias. This means as much as is humanely possible it is purely the evidence that is looked at in an open minded way. Meta-analysis (this means looking at a number of studies on the same subject) revealed a significantly superior effect of acupuncture compared with conventional therapies.
When compared to medications, massage and physical exercise Acupuncture had a superior effect in reduction of chronic spinal pain and function improvement.
Medications whilst great in the short term, have side effects and can lead to other significant health issues. Some examples are digestive issues, malabsorption of nutrients and drug dependence. Acupuncture is safe and it's side effects are improved sleep quality and decreased stress levels. When anybody is in pain, they just want it to go away, and decisions are made based on the most immediate effect. Often people don't realise how quickly acupuncture works. Any oral medication you take for pain takes time to absorb and acupuncture is simply faster. Whilst it does require repeat sessions, it is not forever.
Your body makes your own natural painkillers called encephalins. Acupuncture via your nervous system enables your body to release those again. This allows blood flow to increase to the area of pain and your bodys own immune system can then get to work.
Physical exercise is always beneficial to your health, but for some people, the pain is so intense, this becomes impossible or at the very least challenging. We all perceive pain differently and there are many factors that impact the level of pain people have. Regardless, acupuncture can treat all types of pain.
