This May, we’re focusing on skin cancer awareness and the importance of understanding the risk factors. Skin cancer is now the most common form of cancer in Ireland, but it is also one of the most preventable.

According to the HSE, there are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma skin cancer and non-melanoma skin cancer. Melanoma skin cancer is much less common than non-melanoma skin cancer, but it has become more common in Ireland in recent years.

Most melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or a sunbed. ⭐️Check your skin regularly and become familiar with what is normal for you.
⭐️Take note of any new or changing moles or lesions and do not ignore them.
⭐️Wear sunscreen daily and protect your skin when UV levels are elevated.
⭐️Reduce UV exposure by seeking shade and wearing protective clothing.
⭐️Seek professional advice promptly if you notice anything unusual. 👀 Signs to look out for include a mole that is:
⭐️getting bigger
⭐️changing shape
⭐️changing colour
⭐️bleeding or becoming crusty
⭐️itchy or sore

This month we are supporting women who are planning to get pregnant or who are pregnant with the focus being on the importance of an alcohol-free pregnancy. Ireland has one of the highest estimated rates of prenatal alcohol exposure globally. It is estimated to have the third highest rate of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) worldwide. There is no safe limit of alcohol for pregnancy and any level of consumption is associated with a risk of harm to the baby. This is true for all stages of pregnancy. When alcohol is consumed in pregnancy, the fetus is exposed to a substance that is ‘teratogenic’, meaning that it impacts fetal development with the potential to lead to lifelong adverse impacts. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy can result in a range of complications, including:
▪️Increased risk of miscarriage and stillbirth;
▪️Premature birth;
▪️Low birth weight;
▪️Birth defects, particularly in the heart, kidneys, and facial structure;
▪️Developmental delays, which may not become apparent until later in childhood.
