Big congrats to the Roscommon Senior Hurlers on winning the Nicky Rackard Cup last weekend 🏆👏

Had the pleasure of working with the lads during pre-season in January & February — Yoga sessions on Thursday evenings at Athlone IT as part of their strength, conditioning and recovery.

Tough crew, great work ethic — hope the sessions gave them something extra to carry into championship. Delighted to see them go all the way. Yoga is becoming big in the sports world! Will be a staple for sports teams in the future looking for that extra edge!🔥

“Embrace the Bulk”. Here I am 11kg heavier than I was last June when I done my fitness photoshoot. It’s been a slow but calculated few months adding weight.

When I was in my twenties I played hurling but was very unfit most of the time & “skinny fat” for want of a description. I had no real muscle definition at all and had no idea about nutrition. I started going to the gym but never made much progress for years. I’ve made more progress in the last 2 years than I did in the previous 10 years, simply because I’ve learned a lot more about nutrition & training intensity. They go hand in hand in my opinion.

A bulking phase is used for adding weight, notably muscle. However, some body fat will be added with the muscle so that’s where it gets tricky. It’s a part of the territory! Mentally it’s hard going from the shredded look to a bigger bulkier look. This is where you have to embrace the bulk! Under that layer of body fat is more muscle than before or at least that’s the theory! That’s why nutrition is equally as important on a bulking phase as it is on a weight loss phase.

Progress hasn’t been all one way. I’ve decided to run twice per week for enjoyment and I teach yoga so it hasn’t been an all or nothing approach. Nailed a 5k and 10k PB over Xmas which I didn’t think I’d manage but here we are. Still managing to add a bit of size and the most enjoyable training has ever been.

With that said, get in a calorie surplus for adding weight but make sure it’s calculated so not too much body fat goes on! Some body fat will be added but that’s part of the game! You have to trust the process! Let’s go for food 😅 Embrace the bulk 💪
