Media Statement from the Organisers of Strandhill People’s Market
The organisers of the Strandhill People’s Market have proudly operated the weekly event for over 11 years. From the beginning, our goal has been to support small businesses, create a space for the community, and contribute positively to the economy and culture of Sligo.
Throughout those 11 years, Sligo Airport has been more than a facilitator — it has been a partner, working with us to make the market the success it has become. That spirit of partnership remains today.
The current situation stems from a series of decisions made at Government level, and to be fair, could not have been foreseen. We understand the frustration felt by traders, many of whom are now struggling to pay rent, retain staff, or sustain their business in the absence of the market.
While we continue to work behind the scenes with local representatives and Sligo Airport to explore a constructive solution, we also understand the need for traders to have their voices heard. Their decision to launch a public campaign is a reflection of the pressure they are under — and of the value the market has held in their lives and livelihoods.
We believe that the external support, the online engagement and the petition will only strengthen the case for a solution. It is important that those who care about the market speak up — and we thank all those who already have.
It may seem to be only a weekly market — but in reality, it offers so much more: stability for small businesses, a heartbeat for the community, and a reason for people to gather, return, and belong.
We remain hopeful that, together, a positive resolution can be found.
