'I came to Miriam as I was feeling completely disconnected in my life. I was deeply unhappy and felt isolated despite being surrounded my people. My journey with Miriam is one I could not have imagined or hoped for at the start. She created an incredibly safe environment for me to come into each week. This, along with her compassion and patience allowed me to truly explore myself, my feelings and how I had come to where I was in my life journey. 'I decided to attend therapy with Miriam to work on what I described as a chronic feeling of unrest, of just not being at ease with myself. Over a number of months Miriam helped me to unpick a number of causative factors, to identify and understand the current-day contributions of some negative childhood experiences, and, most importantly, how to sit with the related feelings and emotions I experience as a result. This has taught me how to recognise triggers, and reclaim power and agency in everyday situations. While I know there is always more to work on, and that I will most likely return to explore further, I now feel I have a number of coping mechanisms to work with. I am much more at ease with myself.' - Brian

Peace is a state of calm and tranquility. A disturbance to our peace can be created inwardly in how we treat ourselves or outwardly when others, like friends, family, employers, or countries, try to create 'peace' by force. Without respect and understanding peace is hard to cultivate.

Compassion for ourselves and others can support us to move through the challenges we face to find our peace.

Our thoughts roam and trigger an emotional response within us that we perceive as positive or negative.

When we reality check our thoughts asking 'is this a fact or fiction?' helps us develop our awareness and discern what is real in our experience.

For example....
The thought: 'that is so typical of me, I have always been someone who struggles with x'
The emotions: disappointed, sad, annoyed, fearful, shame
Fact: This is a sweeping statement. There are examples where I have overcome this issue in the past
Fiction: This is typical of me, I am someone who struggles with x.

We have the power to support ourselves in how we think and feel. Strategies like asking ourselves the question 'fact or fiction?..' can support us become mindful of our internal world.

We don't need to wait.. we wait consciously or unconsciously by thinking thoughts like 'I'll do X when....' try supporting yourself to reframe the thought to 'I can do X now..'

Small actions today will support our future self tomorrow.

The beauty of the breathe is it calms our nervous system down. Even better, we don't need an app, meditation or teacher to guide us, our body knows exactly what to do!

Our breathe is our anchor back to this moment. Try paying attention to your breathing and start to take some nice slow, steady, deeper breaths and notice the immediate benefits.

Connecting with the anchor of the breathe gets us out of our head, back into our body and this moment... while helping reduce symptoms of anxiety like fear, racing thoughts, rapid heartbeat and shallow chest breathing.

We spend a great deal of our lifetime focusing on our beliefs, society and culture influences of what a loving relationship 'should' be with someone else.

The longest relationship we will ever have is with ourselves.

Spring Sanctuary Counselling & Psychotherapy

The inspiration for setting up Spring Sanctuary Counselling and Psychotherapy was to offer holistic services to my community who are seeking support in their life. When it comes to life's challenging and rewarding times sometimes all we want is to be heard and understood without judgement or receiving advice.

​The grounding of my practice is based on a humanistic existential view point. I apply a person centered approach and believe that every human is unique. Everyone is responsible for implementing active change in their own lives.

I will support you by focusing on your strengths and what gives you purpose and meaning in life.

​Too often we are told by our society and culture what we 'should' and 'should not' do, say, believe and feel. I offer a supportive environment to find what lies beneath. In my practice you will be provided the time and space to discover what truly matters to you and what will help you fulfill a meaningful and purposeful life.
