Speech and Language Therapy is a very broad therapy area. SLTs assess and treat speech, language and communication difficulties to help people communicate better. We also assess, treat and develop personalised plans to support people who have eating and swallowing problems.
Who?
• Babies: We support babies who were born prematurely and babies who are born with conditions such as cerebral palsy, cleft palate, down syndrome with drinking and swallowing difficulties and early play and communications skills.
• Children: We support children with speech sounds delays and disorders, developmental language delays and disorders, communication difficulties such as stammering and voice disorders. We support children with communication difficulties secondary to other diagnoses such as intellectual disability, Autism and hearing difficulties. This can include setting up and developing augmentative and Alternative Communication systems, such as visual aids, Lamh signing and hi tech systems.
• Adults: SLTs support adults with stammers and voice disorders. SLTs support adults with intellectual disabilities and Autism to develop their communication. SLTs also support adults with communication and swallowing difficulties as a result of medical conditions such as stroke, head and neck cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such as parkinsonism disease and dementia. This can also include setting up and developing augmentative and Alternative Communication systems.
As you can see Speech and Language Therapy is a very broad therapy area and therapists often specialise or gain experience in specific areas. The areas I have the most skills in include early language development/late talkers, working with adults and children with intellectual disabilities and autism as well as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
