A focus on Mental Health in Sport:

I posted on this topic on this same day last year.

Please be aware of the SIGNS & SYMPTOMS of how low energy availability (LEA) and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) can show up in athletes.

This applies to Elite, Sub Elite, Recreational (those training for personal goals), male, female, adult & adolescent athletes. It should be the concern of all managers, coaches, practitioners, parents and players involved in Sport.

The Negative Impact on if you are not eating enough for the intensity of your training & competition can lead to:

DEPRESSION
ANXIETY
IRRITABILITY
LOW MOOD
POOR SLEEP

There is an array of physical signs and symptoms too but for today on World Mental Health Day it is important to link and KNOW the very real and concerning psychological disturbances that can exist if an athlete is intentionally or unintentionally under fuelling.

This can exist if a player is eating healthy (just not enough). It can happen at any stage of a players career.

Lucky me getting to stand up in front of these amazing young athletes educating them for the first time on Sport's Nutrition for training and competing in soccer and all the other sports they play. They have already achieved so much individually and collectively in sport. Thankfully their coach Dara Meaney has the foresight to ensure these girls are looking after themselves off the pitch too. Sleep, fuelling(and issues surrounding under fuelling, hydrating, menstrual cycle (including latest guidelines from ), recovery all included tonight.

Thank you for inviting me speak to your players. And to my cousin Alma for organising it all. Special thanks to my man Sammy for making the banana muffins that I didn't get to taste! 😁

"Dont let yesterday take up too much of today"

So much wisdom shared over weekend. But the importance of living in the moment came up alot. "Thriving" was theme of event and loved s take on what thriving means to her.

Her beautiful daughter is a Leukemia survivor. She said Thriving to her means being fully present for all the simple ordinary moments on any given day. They are the moments you treasure when you are hit with challenging times. And also what you have to do when you are going through something really difficult..stay in the moment, don't think too far ahead. Enjoy the "ordinary moments when going through extraordinary times". Noted ❤️
