The Barkan method of HOT YOGA is a series of 30 postures and is practised in a 30oC room. Ken has been practising yoga for 17 years, starting his practise in the Bikram tradition. Ken has continued to evolve his practise by studying with Baron Baptise and Jimmy Barkan among others around the world. Ken Coffey received his Yoga Alliance recognised qualification in the USA from Jimmy Barkan. Having taught in the USA Ken is delighted to bring this method of HOT YOGA to Galway in 2011. Natasha began practicing yoga 10 years ago and completed the Yoga Alliance Certified Hot Yoga training in the USA in July 2011. The two new Barkan qualified Hot Yoga instructors Mike Matthews and Rebecca O'Donoghue have joined the YogaYoga team in 2012 along with Ciara Delaney and Ann Heskin joined in 2014. Caitriona Ni Lionsigh has also joined the YogaYoga team. She received her Yoga Alliance certified teacher training in Malaysia and she will be teaching the Warm Flow, with a focus on pranyama and relaxation. The Barkan Method is a style of Hatha Yoga that originated from a lineage in Calcutta, India. The Barkan Method finds its roots from this lineage in Calcutta, but also integrates postures from other styles of Yoga to create variations and even greater range of motion. The yoga classes are practiced in a heated room to stretch and strengthen various areas of the body. The practice brings vital balance and restores all systems to optimal health. Consistency will create a physical, mental and spiritual harmony that will be felt in all areas of the practitioner’s life. The PHYSICAL: The yoga asanas are designed to work internally and externally. Internally, improvements to the heart, spleen, kidneys, liver, and intestines are realized through consistent practice. Externally, the joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are all made stronger through The Barkan Method. The MENTAL: As in all forms of yoga, the mind is strengthened through the discipline of The Barkan Method, which helps to eliminate stress, depression, anxiety, and other dysfunctional mental disorders. The Barkan Method helps to create a calming of the mind, quieting of the brain's chatter, and deep relaxation response. The SPIRITUAL: As we strengthen the body and calm the mind, we open ourselves up for a transformational experience. The Intention behind the Barkan Method is to balance and body, quiet the mind and nourish the soul.

What to expect from this 2-hour Alignment Workshop:

Using the Baptiste Methodology™ tools of True North Alignment, you will gain a working knowledge of the commonly used bones and muscles addressed in a Baptiste Power Vinyasa Yoga practice. During this workshop, we will demystify the practice and learn the common language of anatomy and alignment to explore how parts of your body move in relationship to the whole so you can experience each pose in a new way. Discover how to position and move your body to optimize a balance of effort and ease in your practice and use modifications when necessary to create access points to suit your body's strength and flexibility as it is night now. After this workshop, you will experience efficient movement in your practice, that will leave you feeling refreshed versus depleted. This workshop is suitable for all levels

While Ken and Natasha are away on holidays, we are very lucky to have been able to secure a super guest teacher to work along with our team to cover our classes.
Melinda is a 500 Hour Certified Baptiste Teacher who is passionate about sharing the practice of yoga as a lifestyle beyond the walls of her studios in Oregon. She is committed to supporting others through building community and causing positive change in each and every student. As a teacher, she believes it is important that classes be challenging yet accessible for all levels. Her students are empowered both physically and mentally by stretching the boundaries of their current comfort zone and opening up access points to create possibilities in their practice and their life.

When not in the warmth of a heated yoga studio, Melinda enjoys traveling, exploring the great outdoors, dinner parties, assisting Baptiste trainings around the world, and sharing love for life, art, and a good Kombucha.
