Thinking about getting a coil? We know the idea of insertion can feel daunting, so at Galway Bay Medical Centre we take extra steps to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Here are 5 things we do to help make coil insertion more comfortable:

1️⃣ Cytotec prescription beforehand – tablets that help soften and gently dilate the cervix before your appointment.
2️⃣ Anti-inflammatory pain relief – taken in advance to help reduce discomfort.
3️⃣ Use of stirrups – this helps open the pelvis and allows for a smoother, more comfortable insertion.
4️⃣ Local anaesthetic gel – applied directly into the cervix to numb the area.
5️⃣ Local anaesthetic spray – used on the surface of the cervix for additional comfort.

Our goal is to make your appointment as calm, supportive and comfortable as possible.

Did you know? The HSE Free Contraception Scheme covers the full cost of fitting, checking, and removing contraceptive coils if you are aged between 17 and 35

If you’re considering the coil and have questions, our team is here to help. 💙

Thinking about long-term contraception? 💬

At Galway Bay Medical Centre, we offer Implanon NXT insertion and removal - a safe, effective long-acting reversible contraceptive that works for up to 3 years.

In this reel, Dr Kiely demonstrates how the Implanon NXT implant is inserted and removed during quick in-clinic procedures. The implant is placed just under the skin of the upper arm (non-dominant side) and releases a low dose of hormone to help prevent pregnancy.

✔️ Over 99% effective
✔️ Quick insertion & removal
✔️ Long-acting contraception (up to 3 years)

If you're considering the contraceptive implant or want to discuss whether Implanon NXT is right for you, our team is here to help.

Also, if you are aged between 17-35, Implanon is FREE under the Free Contraception Scheme

If you’re struggling with moderate to severe, nodulo-cystic or scarring acne that hasn’t responded to multiple prescribed treatments, oral isotretinoin (Roaccutane) may be an option worth exploring.

✨ Roaccutane is a powerful, vitamin-A–based medication, usually prescribed by Dermatologists in specific cases
✨ Around 70% of patients achieve long-term clearance after one 6-month course
✨ A second course can be considered if needed, bringing overall clearance rates up to ~90%

That said, it’s not suitable for everyone, is unsafe in pregnancy, and requires careful monitoring with the right patient selection.

👩‍⚕️ Dr Sinéad Murphy, who holds a Diploma in Dermatology and additional specialist training, can prescribe Roaccutane in line with evidence-based guidelines.

📅 Please book a double appointment if you feel you’ve exhausted other options or if your GP has suggested this treatment may be appropriate.
