Let’s Talk Oestrogen Sensitivit - not “oestrogen dominance”
Most women I work with don’t have “too much oestrogen”… they have oestrogen sensitivity.
What does that mean?
It means your body struggles to detoxify and recycle certain types of oestrogen, especially the “bad” metabolites:
✨ 4-OH and 16-OH – these can be more reactive, inflammatory, and harder for the body to clear.
✨ 2-OH – this is your protective, beneficial oestrogen pathway.
So the issue is not that your good oestrogen is high.
It’s that your detox pathways (liver, gut, methylation) aren’t processing the more harmful metabolites efficiently — which makes you more sensitive to their effects.
Why does this happen?
A mix of:
• Genetics (your CYP1B1, COMT, GST, MTHFR pathways)
• Chronic stress + cortisol dysregulation
• Poor sleep
• Liver overload
• Gut imbalances
• Environmental toxins (plastics, fragrances, pesticides)
• Inadequate fibre, cruciferous veg, phytonutrients
Symptoms often linked to oestrogen sensitivity
• PMS, heavy periods, clotting
• Breast tenderness
• Bloating
• Headaches/migraines
• Fluid retention
• Anxiety and irritability
• Hot flushes (yes — even with low overall oestrogen!)
• Worsening symptoms when HRT starts or doses change
The good news? You can shift your pathways.
With proper support you can:
✔ Improve 2-OH production
✔ Support methylation (to neutralise reactive oestrogens)
✔ Reduce environmental exposures
✔ Strengthen liver + gut clearance
✔ Personalise nutrition based on your genetics
✔ Work with HRT with your biology, not against it
This is why genetic testing, symptom mapping and a personalised plan can make such a difference — you’re not guessing, you’re supporting your unique pathways.
Oestrogen isn’t the enemy.
Your body just needs the right tools to process it safely and efficiently.
If your symptoms feel unexplained, cyclic, or worsened with stress or HRT changes, this may be part of your picture — and it’s absolutely something that can be improved with the right approach.
