DEALING WITH INJURIES: I was lucky enough to be able to attend a 2 day training camp with world class grappler Owen Livesey the past few days. Great sessions, great vibe on the mats, great techniques and tough rounds. I was also abit unlucky in that I picked up abit of a freak injury to my shin (bone bruise/ contusion) which should clear up in the next 2 to 4 weeks (all going well with no fractures etc).
From rehabbing countless jiu jitsu athletes over the years, most people when they get an injury think “right, that’s me done until I’m pain free” and just stay away from training, maybe even get abit depressed at the thoughts of losing all that hard earned progress.
What a lot of people don’t realise though is that injuries can be a good opportunity to work on different aspects of your training. Personally, I’ll be able to drill stand up positions and anything where I avoid getting pressure on the shin (intense pain btw!). I’ll also be able to work on energy systems and commit to strength training for the next few weeks which I’d struggle to fit in otherwise.
A lot of people think they need to take a complete break but it’s all about finding an entry point of what you’re capable to do. Whether it’s drilling, light rolling with a trusted partner or if you’re not able for that, get stronger…. build a “No Quit” gas tank, develop in other ways, gameplan etc.
The worst thing you can do is nothing, so do something! Lean ar aghaidh! / Keep going!
I help combat athletes in Cork rehab injuries to come back in even better shape than they were pre-injury. Whether that’s just getting over their existing injuries or building that “No-Quit” gas tank which will allow them to get back on the mats with confidence.
If you’d like to learn more or work with me; DM me the word “NoQuit” and I’ll be in touch 📈
