Just noticing your body’s response to a stressful situation can be enough to let it go. Permission to Just Notice is a magical power. It brings us into awareness and that’s what you need when your body is full of stress. Just noticing can bring peace.

What robs you of peace?

Give yourself permission to be human and that’s good enough.

Yesterday I got a text to tell me I was a close contact. (First of all, how the years have changed us to allow that sentence to make any sense.) The first thing I did was panic, then I went straight to planning where I would go to isolate. It took me thirty minutes to notice there was something strange about the link in the text - it was just a scam.

When I review those minutes I realise I did notice something about the wording, about the reference to paying for postage but I ignored all that.

Permission to Just Notice can save disaster planning!

You have permission to just notice, when others are angry, when you are panicking, when you are sad. You’ve always had permission. I've been learning to make sourdough bread using a sourdough mother. The sourdough mother is the part that allows the bread to rise and you keep it in a jar. It will last a very long time (years and years) if you feed it regularly. In fact you can also feed it irregularly if you rest it in the fridge during its hunger times. The one thing you can't do is use every scrap of it from the jar... you have to leave something of her for later.

Don't use all your energy “mothering” others... keep some and feed it. But if you can’t feed it, give it a break and put it in the fridge!

For the past month I’ve been learning to make the “perfect” pizza dough. By perfect I mean… edible. Not exactly a high bar but my experience has been amazingly different because of it. Edible in this case means if I’m doing my best right now in this moment with this level of expertise and this level of energy it’ll be great if the results are also edible.

This is a big shift for someone who used to give up when things got messy. Like this morning, I decided to try out the dough hook attachment on the mixer to knead the dough. It’s a great time/energy saving device, taking less than 8 minutes versus the 20 minutes to knead by hand. No brainer really and it was going great for the first minute but then there was a couple of loud bangs and black smoke… not ideal. This is my definition of things getting messy. I should have been saying mean things to myself at this point and I should have given up on dough learning but instead I unplugging the mixed, opened the windows, scraped down the dough hook and set a twenty minute timer for the hand kneading. It only has to be edible…

I’ve been using the cards to remind myself that my perfectionist thinking is not helping me live my loveliest life. When you’re someone (like me🤔) who thinks you have to be perfect, then NOT giving up when the mixer explodes (🌋) feels like a big win and kinda lovely.

Do you put pressure on yourself with high expectations?

Permission to make my life easier…There’s an Irish singer who was famous all over the world in the 1920’s and 30’s. His name was John McCormack. I remember my dad telling me a story about cycling from his home in west Wicklow to Dublin (a distance of 80km) to hear McCormack sing. My dad would have been only 11 so this may have been one of his tall tales! Nonetheless the story stuck with me.

Today there was an article online about him and at the end of the article it said that he died when he was 61 🤔 …I will be 61 this month…

Perfect timing to remind myself-: every birthday is a bonus… every day is an opportunity to find ways to make our lives easier and more lovely ❤️ I hope you find ways to make your life lovier. I’m even more committed to learning how to make lovely pizza dough!

Have a grand day to be alive❤️

Permission to notice how you feel when you're doing something you love...

I love playing with paper, card and glue. No matter the results when I walk back into my studio the next morning I’m excited to see what I did yesterday! And some days I remember it's a work in progress and I let it tell me what it needs to help it be more beautiful. Just like we're all beautiful works in progress. We don't have to be mean about where we are on the progress bar. Just notice the progress and carry on with our work. Have grand day❤️

The full quote is “If we listened to our intellect, we’d never have a love affair. We’d never have a friendship. We’d never go into business, because we’d be cynical. Well, that’s nonsense. You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.” - Ray Bradbury

Belonging is a big deal for humans but sometimes we get confused and think it's about fitting in. Fitting in in our job, our profession, our friends, our community, our page, our instagram feed. We think we have to be someone else, someone better, someone smarter, someone more successful, someone thinner, someone healthier. It makes us say, Yes, of course, when we want to say No defenitely not. It makes us struggle on when all we want to do is stop and ask for help.

What would it be like to believe you belong here, in this beautiful world, as you? Exactly you. No bells, no whistles, no frills. What would that be like?

Often our go to when we get hurt is protection, defence, rage. It's almost impossible to show our wound, to anyone, even ourselves. Imagine if you were brave enough to notice: I am hurt. Just notice.

We've finally arrived. Here where we are. We took everything of ourselves with us and brought it here. Now. Here we are. And tomorrow wherever we are we will be able to say, we are here. There is only now and here. It is enough to be just here, just now. You've arrived.

What difference does that make to your day?

P.S. You have permission to believe you are enough, you’ve always had it. Permission cards are gentle reminders that we have a unique job of being ourselves in a sometimes difficult world. Find them at www.permission.cards.
