Screening Saves Lives

Screening is one of the most effective ways to detect cancer early - often before symptoms appear - dramatically improving survival rates and treatment outcomes.
Timely access to screening can make the difference between early intervention and late-stage diagnosis.

Symptom Awareness and Education
Symptom awareness and education is also key to assisting people with decision making ability to visit their GP when something has changed for them in their bodies ensuring that those outside the screening age have better and timely access to the appropriate investigations and treatment plans, for the right person at the right time helping to make an early diagnosis thus saving lives.

BowelScreen Expansion: An Opportunity to Save More Lives
BowelScreen is Ireland’s national bowel cancer screening programme, currently offering free screening to individuals aged 59 to 70. It aims to detect bowel cancer at an early, more treatable stage using the FIT (faecal immunochemical test), a simple at-home screening kit.

Right now, work is underway to assess the feasibility of expanding the programme. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has just published a draft Health Technology Assessment (HTA) on the proposed expansion of BowelScreen to include people aged 50 to 54.
The draft HTA makes a compelling case — clinically, economically and ethically — for extending screening.

Every year this change is delayed, lives are lost that could have been saved.

While the draft HIQA HTA outlines both benefits and challenges, we’ve compiled some key findings that support the case for lowering the screening age, with references to the relevant sections of the report.
