On Saturday September 6th 2025, I managed to run 🏃♂️ my first sub 20 minute 5K at the Clonmel Parkrun in a time of 19 minutes 55 seconds.
The journey to a sub 20 minute 5K here started on the 5th of August 2018 when I got hit by a car 🚗 and ended up with a broken Hip and leg 🦵!!
Several surgeons and physios told me that I’d never run again!
But I threw myself into Yoga, Pilates and Strength Training for the next 2 and a half years, getting stronger and more mobile as time passed. I never doubted I’d return to running.
In 2021, I started running again, very slowly. It was 6 months of slow progress before I could run 30 minutes pain free.
In October 2021, I found Parkrun and started racing again. In 2017, I had ran a 5k in 19 minutes 44 seconds and the idea of ever getting there again was a distant dream!
In April 2022, I ran my first ever Parkrun in Clonmel in a time of 22 minutes 20 seconds and this was an all out effort. Then over the next 3 and a half years I slowly chipped away on it.
In September 2023, I ran 20 minutes 54 seconds. This was the first time I ran under 21 minutes for 5k since my accident.
In October 2024, I ran 20 minutes 40 seconds pushing Aaron in the buggy, the first buggy Parkrun in under 21 minutes.
In June 2025, I ran it in 20 minutes 31 seconds and then finally on the 6th of September I ran it 19 minutes 55 seconds. This was the 49th time I ran the Clonmel Parkrun!
This progress was achieved by consistency.
Slowly building running volume and speed.
Constantly focusing on my Yoga, Pilates and Strength training.
If I can do this then anyone can achieve anything they set their mind to!!
