A New Chapter: Combining Clinical Work and Research

I wanted to share some exciting personal news, this October, I’ll be starting a PhD at Dublin City University after being awarded a fully funded scholarship to support the research.

The focus of my research will be on how emerging technologies like generative AI are influencing how psychotherapists reflect on their work and make sense of their professional identity.

It’s a topic that feels really timely, and I’m excited to explore both the potential and the challenges that come with it. I’m hoping the work will help open up some honest conversations, ones that could benefit clients, therapists, and people outside the world of psychotherapy/psychology.

I’ll still be seeing clients, but at a reduced capacity to allow space for the research. If you’re currently working with me or thinking about getting in touch, feel free to reach out, I’ll do my best to accommodate.

Thanks to everyone who has supported me so far. I’ll share more as the research journey unfolds.

"Suffering is good for you."

It’s something my mother used to say all the time—and I used to laugh at it. But these days, I’m beginning to see the truth in it.

I recently watched a video of Elon Musk saying there’s a 20% chance AI could wipe out humanity. That’s scary enough. But what really stuck with me was when he quietly mentioned that the biggest challenge for humans will be finding fulfilment.

That hit differently.

In a world where more and more is being done for us, what happens to us? What happens to meaning, to connection, to the parts of life that make it worth living?

I wrote a blog about this—about meaning, suffering, and what we stand to lose if we don’t stay rooted in what makes us human.

If this is something that perks your interest, I’d love for you to take a few minutes to read and share your thoughts.

Elon Musk recently made headlines again—this time not just for rockets or electric cars, but for a simple, chilling statistic: he believes there’s a 20% chance that AI could wipe out humanity within the next ten years. It’s a bold claim, but it wasn’t what struck me most. What really got unde...

Not every battle we fight is visible.

Some of the hardest work people do happens quietly, in their minds, their hearts, and behind closed doors.
No applause. No finish line. Just them, showing up for themselves, again and again.

That’s courage too.

Maybe today, that looks like:

→ Saying no when it’s easier to say yes.
→ Speaking kindly to yourself.
→ Asking for help.
→ Resting without guilt.

What does courage look like for you these days, in the small, everyday moments?

🧠 Who’s the G.O.A.T. of April Fool’s Day pranks?

You might think it’s your kids, your partner… maybe even your dog.
But the real master of mischief? Your own mind.

This blog explores how our brains play sneaky tricks on us every day—through automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions—and how we can start catching them in the act.

If your brain has ever convinced you that:
You’re not good enough
Everyone’s judging you
Or that the smallest slip-up means total failure...
…this post is for you.

👇 Have a read, have a laugh, and maybe even catch the G.O.A.T. in action

This St. Patrick’s Day, let’s celebrate resilience, courage, and the power of facing our fears. 🍀 St. Patrick’s journey holds valuable lessons for our mental health—reminding us that even in the darkest times, we can find strength and purpose. This blog is not just about Ireland’s patron saint, but also a tribute to my friend Gary Myers, whose love for all things Irish inspired me to honour his memory in this way. 💚 Let’s support each other, check in on those we love, and keep the conversation on mental health alive.

When the sensory land of the body isn’t a safe place to be, we check out, we leave. It’s a matter of survival.

➡️We are living in a time when more of us than ever are disconnected or dissociated from our bodies.

We’ve learnt that in order to survive, cope and thrive, we need to live in our heads.

And off the back of it, we’ve created an AI digital world that asks us to stay there.

➡️While it may initially feel safer, there are some dangers to being disconnected from our bodies. These include:

📌Inability to sense danger

When something or someone is a threat to us, we may not register until we are already being harmed, or in some cases, until afterwards.

📌 inability to follow intuition and instinct

When we have a decision to make, it may be hard or impossible to tune into what’s right for us, so we may either leap with little information or place our future in the hands of others, who may or may not have our best intentions in mind, or truly understand our needs and dreams

📌inability to detect early warning signs of illness or burnout

This often manifests as falling sick either often or hard, becuase there’s no calibration and selfcare when the body starts speaking

📌inability to find somatic limits

This may include understanding our own hunger, alcohol tolerance, adrenalin spikes and nervous system capacity. This may lead to living in ways that overwhelm our ‘system’ and send us into overdrive or depletion

📌 inability to make sense of, name and process emotions

Emotions are sensory and somatic first, so if we are not associated, we may tend to get emotionally flooded or feel somewhat aloof and disconnected.

👉Healing asks us to come home to our bodies.

👉This is about returning to a state of responsiveness and empowerment.

❓Do you feel that you seem to be the only one who makes an effort within your intimate and close relationships?

❓Have you found that despite red flags showing up in your relationships, you will remain in them, hoping that they will get better?

When connection love and care haven’t been part of our daily bread, we learn to seek for it in all the wrong places.

➡️This may show up as:

📌Being attracted to harmful or avoidant/emotionally unavailable people
📌working really really extra extra hard to get approval/validaton
📌accepting breadcrumbs of attention or care
📌making excuses for people who are disrespectful or hurtful (and enabling harmful dynamics to continue)
📌attracted to drama, high intensity and a pleasure/pain high-low cycle
📌poor or non-existent boundaries, always adjusting to hold onto a connection
📌loss of self - shape shifting into different forms in order to attract, please or keep a relationship

If this post resonates with you, and you would like to find ways to stop these unhealthy patterns in your relationships, then therapy could help.
