The Kindness of Strangers.

I had a little break in the last couple of weeks and got to spend time with family in Ireland ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช visiting from ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and attended a beautiful family wedding in Yorkshire, UK ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿฅฐ

My flight home was cancelled. So like most people at end of a break away, I'd spent a fortune, I'd plans to meet up again with family before they returned to USA and work commitments, EVERYTHING needed to be rescheduled. This was not ideal... I'll admit I felt stressed ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Our flight was rebooked for next evening, an overnight stay at a hotel, with transport to/from was provided but we had to be patient while this was arranged with the airline representative.

By this stage I'd accepted I couldn't control the situation and instead got curious about where we was going on this mystery impromptu trip, and decided to get to know my fellow stranded travel companions better which led to chats and laughter in the midst of frustration and confusion.

We were sent to
In Bradford (which is the UK's City of Culture 2025).
Everyone at the hotel was so friendly and helpful ๐Ÿ™

Bradford city centre has some fabulous architecture and the most impressive bookstore I've ever seen with lovely staff. A beautiful historic gothic building that was a wool exchange (I thought it was a converted church!). I bought a copy of The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (a literary classic on my "to read list" for a very long time).

Sometimes best laid plans go out the window, when this happens try to be patient, be curious and put some trust in the kindness of strangers. You might be pleasantly surprised at where the unexpected takes you!

Big thanks to the customer care team at especially Caroline and her colleagues (I wish I'd gotten everybody's name) and the two taxi drivers from Arrow who reassured us they wouldn't forget to pick us up for return flight ๐Ÿ˜„

How much does what Kristin Neff is saying in this video resonate with you? It certainly makes sense to me.

In psychology we sometimes say what we resist persists, Freud discovered what gets repressed doesn't go away. Instead it shows up in other ways, causing us more suffering.

In mindfulness there's an equation: Suffering = Pain x Resistance

Instead of resisting challenges, you can respond wisely by:

โœ… Pause, acknowledge when things are difficult

โœ… Place a hand on your heart

โœ… Take a deep breath

โœ… Ask yourself "What do I need right now? How can I be a best friend to myself in this difficult moment?

โœ… Listen to your inner wisdom, be guided by self-compassion and proceed with kindness ๐Ÿฉท

Thanks to Carly at .ie for inviting me as one of her expert speakers to come and talk to her "Nurture Nest" community, an online group for mothers invested in their wellbeing.

When Carly first contacted me, the theme of self-compassion immediately popped into my head as a worthy topic as mothers are often the CEO of everything, juggling childcare, busy careers and the bulk of household responsibilities.

On top of this there's often high expectations of themselves and the expectations of others (everyone has an opinion on how you should parent, am I right?) and not surprisingly sometimes all this pressure can lead to "mum guilt" especially for new mothers.

And let's face it the human instinct to compare ourselves to others and the pressure of social media doesn't help ๐Ÿคฏ

Inspired by the findings of I shared how self-compassion is a practical mental health and wellbeing tool, increasing resilience, which can be particularly beneficial in motherhood and also teaches children to be self-compassionate, by way of role-modelling.

As well as a grounding meditation, reflections, practical tools and tips, I guided a lovely compassion-focused Lovingkindness meditation, one I personally find particularly helpful in cultivating compassion for self and others ๐Ÿ™

As a small business I have a FB page.....but for a while I've been wondering why? ๐Ÿค” Because 'I'm supposed to" although I've never really been a "supposed to" kind of gal. I don't usually just do things because other people are, or because it's "expected" (I mean who decides these rules to live by anyway?).

There's a few dedicated supporters who interact on this page, thank you, thank you, thank you! ๐Ÿ’—

Some folks might notice when I post on here, it's usually a cross-post from Insta (when I remember to do it that is, sorry if it's not all the time - my bad!).

I occasionally post to FB local community groups, that's always really, really worthwhile.

BUT usually it feels like screaming into the void if I'm honest ๐Ÿ˜ฑThere's something very exposing about FB, it just feels VERY public, the wild west of socials (meanwhile TikTok is saying "hold my beer") But whatever way I look at it, I just don't feel this kind of way about Instagram or LinkedIn ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

However, doing this FB post today has been wildly cathartic!

So, if one day, I suddenly stop posting here you'll know where to find me! ๐Ÿ˜€

Ever heard of "Stop and smell the Roses"?

It's that time of year when my favourite flowers are in bloom ๐ŸŒน I stop, pause and take in beauty whenever I see it, it's a natural mood enhancer, it only takes a few minutes and it's free!

I'm delighted to have been a finalist at the Network Ireland Kildare Branch Businesswoman of the Year Awards 2025 in the Emerging Businesswoman category โœจ at the beautiful โ›ณ

Congratulations to all the winners and finalists ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ and while I didn't walk away with an ๐Ÿ† I really enjoyed the whole experience because......

โœ… The awards process itself was meaningful and had a sense of purpose, which increases happiness.

โœ… Although I didn't expect to win, I accepted on the night there may be a twinge of difficult emotions, because as humans it's natural for our negativity bias to kick in, to second guess or doubt our abilities, especially in comparison to others, but a healthy dose of self-compassion and acceptance offsets this.

โœ… It's helpful to turn the focus outwards, acknowledging the majority of finalists didn't win an award, this shared experience creates a sense of togetherness and camaraderie.

โœ… In Buddhist philosophy, having sympathetic joy "Mudita" means taking pleasure in other's good fortune and this makes you feel good.

โœ… Having a sense of humour - the benefits of smiling and laughter are scientifically proven to reduce stress and enhance wellbeing.

โœ… Music and dancing is therapeutic and we were lucky enough to have as entertainment ๐Ÿ’ƒ

Final message - you're far more likely to regret the opportunities you turned down than the ones you accepted. So if you're offered the chance to pursue an achievement or an accolade - go for it, either way it's a win-win ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

Well it's been busy and a whirlwind of excitement for the past few weeks for Tranquility Wellbeing with Suzanne I'm thrilled to be a finalist in the Network Ireland Kildare Branch Businesswoman of the Year Awards 2025 ๐Ÿคฉ I'm full of gratitude and so thankful for all the lovely best wishes I've received ๐Ÿ™

I never thought I'd be a finalist at any awards event, it goes to show how surprising life can be, the downs but also the ups! The most important thing for me is helping others to live calmer, happier lives because that's what everyone deserves, that's what's possible and that's what I can help you to achieve!

There's a lovely write-up in the Leinster Leader / Kildare Live about Network Ireland explaining about the awards and the non profit voluntary organisation which I'm proud to be a part of for over a year and a half, making not just connections but friendships with some really wonderful women ๐Ÿฅฐ

It's a bittersweet feeling to be a finalist at a business awards event. I really appreciate the opportunity to showcase my wellbeing business, and get recognition for the extremely hard work and dedication it takes.

But when I first started my career in psychology, business awards were the furthest thing from my mind. I simply wanted to help people, that was my goal. I wanted to gain an understanding of what causes mental and emotional suffering and how to alleviate it, and I've had many, many rewarding experiences as a result, minus any awards, but no less life-changing.

Since becoming a certified Mindfulness Meditation teacher, I'm always returning to "seeing things as they truly are" and was reminded today that simply supporting myself and others to live calmer, happier lives, in the midst of it all, remains my true purpose ๐Ÿ˜Š

Namaste
