The guilt one feels when setting boundaries is called unearned guilt.

When you set a healthy boundary, you will probably feel good at first, then experience some self-doubt and guilt. This is unearned guilt. Know that this is common. It’s part of the process of setting healthy, helpful boundaries. These negative feelings are not the truth, they are the result of an ingrained self-punishment impulse that you must acknowledge but not let succeed.

Tell your guilt ( Yes, I am serious!) that you see it, feel it and know it’s there. Tell your guilt you are making a good decision and that you will persevere. Picture this unearned guilt as a childhood friend cajoling you into getting into trouble with them. Tell your companion, this guilt, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

I’m gonna just leave this one here.

Don’t ever close yourself off from emotions, love, connection…
Your heart is one of the greatest qualities you possess. 🤍 and don’t ever apologize for how deeply you feel.

You never question the emotions of others, so why invalidate yours?

We all hold some core beliefs about who we are, our place in the world, what to expect from others and the world around us. These beliefs are developed early in life through the experiences we have. Our brains pay close attention to any information that reconfirmed those beliefs, even when the beliefs are damaging. This is because it is more psychologically threatening to have our core beliefs about the world shaken because they give us a template through which we can understand our lives. For example, someone with a core belief that they are unloveable and can expect rejection from others may be highly sensitive to criticism from others or any signs of potential rejection. But beginning a relationship with someone who wants a close relationship can then feel confusing because they expect to experience rejection. Building awareness of our own core beliefs and the influence this has on us can help us to begin the process of positive change and free us from the vicious cycles we get stuck in.
