"In an age where leaders have grown numb, elites have fallen silent, and public figures hesitate between ambiguity and avoidance â a clear, unwavering voice emerged from the far west, from Ireland.
On August 4, 2025, President Michael D. Higgins, the calm and soft-spoken 80-year-old Irish president, spoke words of truth that many powerful heads of state, ministers, and institutions across the world have not dared to utter.
He said it plainly and publicly:
âWill we just stand by and watch children starve to death, and women suffer from thirst?â
President Higgins called on the United Nations Secretary-General to invoke Chapter VII of the UN Charter â the clause that allows for enforcement action, even military intervention, to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in desperate need in Gaza.
Yes, he said it: by force, if necessary.
What kind of man says such a thing?
What kind of conscience does it take for a president of a small, neutral nation â with no armies, no influence, no geopolitical leverage â to say what so many others will not?
While regional powers and major institutions remain silent or issue carefully worded statements, President Higgins chose clarity over diplomacy.
He did not call for mild mediation or soft appeals.
He did not hide behind vague language.
He said it bluntly:
âThis is an unbelievable destruction of an entire people.â
He pointed to 6,000 trucks loaded with enough food to last three months â blocked from entering.
And he called it what it is: a disgrace.
He didnât speak like a politician calculating his words.
He spoke like a human being â his voice trembling with emotion as he looked into the eyes of starving children and felt compelled to shout at a stagnant global system:
Act. Even if it takes force.
This elderly man, from a small country with no military power or global sway, raised his voice against the powerful.
He demanded that the UN Secretary-General bypass the paralysis of the Security Council and open humanitarian corridors through legal, political, and moral will.
At a time when those with wealth, weapons, and media stay silent,
At a time when too many people of influence remain passive,
Higgins stood up and said what many leaders could not.
He did what many in power failed to do.
He said what few dared to say.
Because truth does not wear a uniform, speak a certain language, or require a title.
Truth is in the trembling voice of an old man who witnesses horror and still finds the courage to say:
Enough."
