Happy Ormonde Nurse Month 🩺💙

Meet Sky, who came in to be spayed 🐱✨

Our nurses were with her every step of the way. From placing her cannula (giving safe access to administer anaesthetic medications and fluids), to gently giving her pre-med so she could relax before surgery.

Once asleep, she was carefully intubated to protect her airway and connected to our anaesthetic machine. Her surgical site was clipped and cleaned to maintain a sterile field and reduce infection risk.

Throughout the entire procedure, our nurses continuously monitored her heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, oxygen levels and temperature, she was never left unattended.

And of course, the most important part 🥰 post-op cuddles, warmth, and close monitoring while she recovered.

Our nurses play a huge role in keeping your babies safe, comfortable, and cared for at every stage 💙

Veterinary Nurses, the heartbeat of our hospital!
Our nurses wear many hats and spend years studying their craft, yet are so often overlooked. They are anesthesiologists, laboratory technicians, ICU nurses, nutrition advisors, and can even run consultations, not to mention expert cuddle-givers and comfort providers to your furry friends 🤍

This month, we’re shining a light on our incredible veterinary nurses and the consultations they offer, and showing how their knowledge and care can truly improve your pet’s quality of life.

👀 Keep an eye out over the next little while for more posts highlighting our wonderful nurses here in Ormonde.

🐾 Microchipping: A Small Chip That Makes a Big Difference 🐾
Did you know that microchipping is a legal requirement for all dogs in Ireland? 🇮🇪
Under Irish legislation, all dogs must be microchipped and registered — it’s not just recommended, it’s the law.
🔹 A microchip is a tiny, permanent form of ID
🔹 It greatly increases the chances of lost pets being reunited with their owners
🔹 It helps protect pets from theft and accidental rehoming
🔹 It ensures your details are linked to your pet on an approved database
While microchipping is not yet a legal requirement for cats, we strongly recommend it. Cats are excellent explorers, and a microchip can be the difference between a lost pet and a happy reunion 🐱💕
✨ Remember: It’s just as important to keep your contact details up to date on the microchip database — an outdated phone number can stop a reunion from happening.
If you’re unsure whether your pet is microchipped, needs to be registered, or if your details need updating, our team is happy to help.

🧪✨ Fast Answers. Better Care. ✨🧪
At our hospital, we’re proud to have IDEXX in-house blood and urine lab machines, which means quicker, more accurate diagnostics for your pet 🐾
💡 Why does in-house testing matter?
✔ Faster results – often the same day, sometimes within minutes
✔ Earlier diagnosis – so we can start treatment sooner
✔ Real-time decision making – no waiting days for answers
✔ Less stress for your pet – fewer repeat visits
✔ High-quality, reliable results you can trust
From routine wellness checks to urgent sick-pet visits, our in-house lab allows us to closely monitor organ function, detect disease early, and tailor treatment plans specifically for your pet 🐶🐱
Because when it comes to their health, time matters 💙

🐾 Bladder Stones in Pets: What You Need to Know 🐾
Bladder stones (also called uroliths) are mineral formations that develop in the urinary bladder of dogs and cats. They can be uncomfortable—and sometimes dangerous—if left untreated.
🚨 Common signs of bladder stones include:
• Straining or difficulty urinating
• Frequent attempts to urinate
• Blood in the urine
• Accidents in the house
• Pain or discomfort when urinating
🩺 How are bladder stones treated?
Some stones may dissolve with prescription diets, but others are too large or the wrong type to dissolve safely. In these cases, a cystotomy is recommended.
🔪 What is a cystotomy?
A cystotomy is a surgical procedure where the bladder is carefully opened so stones can be completely removed. This allows us to:
✔ Relieve pain and urinary blockage
✔ Prevent ongoing irritation or infection
✔ Submit stones for analysis to help prevent recurrence
💙 Recovery & prevention
Most pets recover very well after surgery with proper pain control, rest, and follow-up care. Long-term prevention often includes dietary changes, increased water intake, and regular monitoring.
If your pet is showing signs of urinary discomfort, don’t wait—early treatment makes a big difference! 🐶🐱

Dinky was accompanied by his big bro Denny for his first visit to the clinic, sometimes all you need is a buddy to make that first vet check easier 🥰💞
