The UK Equality and Human Rights Commission has just issued new guidance stating that employers must make "reasonable adjustments" for women experiencing menopause symptoms, or they could face lawsuits for disability discrimination.
Menopause symptoms can have a significant impact on a woman's ability to work. Ā Some of these symptoms can be anxiety, mood swings, hot flushes, brain fog, difficulty sleeping, and irregular periods.
According to some research, 2/3 of women aged between 40 and 60 report that these symptoms have a negative impact on their work life, and one in 10 women end up leaving their jobs. However, many women don't feel comfortable sharing this at work and requesting adjustments.
This new guidance states that employers should offer changes such as providing rest areas or flexible hours or relaxing dress policies to allow women to wear cooler clothes. Failing to make such adjustments amounts to disability discrimination on the grounds of age and sex if the symptoms have a "long-term and substantial impact" on a woman's ability to carry out her daily work.
This is a welcome development and hopefully, it will help open up the conversation about menopause and raise more awareness.
