Dr. Mary O'Kane (Lecturer in Psychology and Education) will be hosting an online talk on Tuesday 16th August 22 at 7pm.
The move from primary to secondary school can result in both anxiety and excitement, and that is just for the parents! This is one of the most significant transitions our young teens face. The changes are social, emotional, and academic, as they move from being the ‘seniors’ in their primary school to the ‘juniors’ in this new educational environment. In this talk Dr Mary O’Kane outlines some of the challenges faced during this transition, and offers very practical advice on how we can support students on this new educational journey

In our society, a mother suffers guilt no matter what she does.⁣

If she’s on top of her kids making sure everything’s okay, she’s called a helicopter mom, and if she lets them run around as she sits on the side talking to a friend, she’s neglectful.⁣

If she prefers cooking from scratch and organic everything, her kids are “going to go crazy on junk food when they go to someone else’s house.” And if she feeds them donuts and muffins for breakfast some mornings because she’s in a rush or 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦, then her kids are unhealthy. ⁣

If she breastfeeds and doesn’t produce enough milk, and her baby isn’t thriving, then she’s a failure. But when she adds formula, she’s more of a failure for not giving her baby all breast milk.⁣

If she stays home with her kids, she should be working—"how can her family financially keep up?” But if she's working, she's met with "they're only little once."⁣

If she hasn't lost the postpartum weight, "gosh, she let herself go." But if she did, "wow, she must not eat, spend hours working out, and neglect her children.”⁣

In a society that knows “everything” and places too many expectations on moms,⁣
If you listen to everyone else,⁣
you’re always going to fall short.⁣

So, DON’T LISTEN,⁣
and stop feeling bad for your choices.⁣

Throw those internalized unrealistic expectations away,⁣
and do what’s best for you and your family.⁣

It’s called 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 for a reason.⁣

Besides, if you love your children and try,⁣
you’re a good mom.⁣

Hot Flushes & Kinesiology

Over 75% of women will experience hot flushes in the lead up to menopause. They can continue for years, both before and after your period stops. They can be accompanied by insomnia, sweating, palpitations, weight gain, vaginal dryness, anxiety, and lack of energy.
While during menopausal years hot flushes are mostly caused by fluctuating hormone levels, they can also be triggered by alcohol, caffeine, smoking, medication, stress and obesity among other things.
Kinesiology eases the symptoms of menopause by gently and naturally working on pressure points and energy fields in your body to rebalance your hormone levels, and release any stress built up in your system.

Well said, everyone has their own choice. Just be kind. ❤️

The vaccinated people are scared.
•They’re scared to get COVID.
•They’re scared someone they love might get it and possibly die from it.
•They were worried they might not get to travel again or see their international families.
•They’re not ignorant or ‘sheeple’ (I loathe that term) - they feel like they’re doing the right thing for themselves and the people around them.
•This may not have been an easy choice.
•Unfortunately they might have felt obligated to do so.
•They might have been scared to get the needle.

While you may not agree with them, it’s important to understand WHY these people have made their choice.
You may think they’re wrong, but I’m sure you’ve felt scared and afraid before.
It feels terrible.
We need to have compassion and empathy for people making a hard choice that’s different than yours.

The unvaccinated are scared.
•They’re not inconsiderate monsters who thought “I’m going to try to screw over the rest of the people and not get my vaccine.”
•They’re worried about long term side affects.
•They’re worried about their immune systems.
•They’re afraid of how much the government is stepping in on their personal choices, freedoms and rights.
•They’re scared they might end up with Bells Palsy, myocarditis, shingles, blood clots, a miscarriage, a heart attack, heart palpitations, profuse unending vomiting, an autoimmune disease activation or death.
•They’re worried they might never see their international families again.
•It would be easier to get the shot.
•It isn’t easy to say no to the shot.

While you may not agree with them, it’s important to understand WHY these people have made their choice.
You may think they’re wrong, but I’m sure you’ve felt scared and afraid before.
It feels terrible.

💜 We need to have compassion and empathy for people making a hard choice that’s different than yours.

This is NOT the time to turn on each other.
It is never the time to do that.
Stop the divide.
Come together with compassion, empathy, understanding, patience and forgiveness.

💜 Take a moment to listen without judgement.
Take time to see where the others are coming from.
Everyone is doing their best.
Lashing out and placing blame will only make things worse.
Shaming is not the way to change someone’s mind.
Understanding why and having compassion is our only choice.

Choose kindness, always ✨
