“Where should we hold the wake?”

A wake, sometimes known as a viewing or repose, is an event where friends and family of the deceased person gather together to remember their loved one. A wake can be held in the deceased person’s home, the home of a close relative, or at a funeral home or other public building. Members of the public can visit to offer their sympathies to the family. It is becoming more common, especially in large towns and cities, for the traditional family home wake to be replaced by a ‘viewing’ at a funeral home, where members of the public can queue up to walk past the coffin and express their sympathies to the family.

Please have a think about whether you would like to have a public or private wake for your family. A good compromise may be to give the extended community the opportunity to pay their respects during a public visiting time, with privacy times for family only. Another alternative is to have a "dual location wake" - combining a public funeral home and a private family home reposing (subject to availability).

Ultimately, it is very important that if you hold very strong wishes regarding the hosting of a wake and how it is managed that you decide on your wishes and share them.
