📢 ‼️ SUMMER WATER SAFETY ‼️📢
This is what drowning really looks like.
Not loud. Not flailing. Not what you think.
📸 See the photo below. That child is drowning.
No shouting. No drama. Just silent struggle, seconds from death.
🆘 19 people have already drowned in Ireland this year

That includes several teenagers in calm, familiar places – rivers, lakes, even shallow water.
Most drownings happen when an adult is nearby… but distracted.
🔍 What Real Drowning Looks Like:
1️⃣ SILENT – They can't call for help.
2️⃣ FAST – Can happen in 20 to 60 seconds.
3️⃣ NO SPLASHING – Just head tilted back, mouth open, trying to breathe.
4️⃣ BODY IS VERTICAL – Legs cycling like they’re climbing an invisible ladder.
5️⃣ NOT MOVING FORWARD – They’re stuck in place.
6️⃣ THEY MAY BE INCHES FROM SAFETY – but panic takes over.
7️⃣ MAY HAPPEN IN SHALLOW WATER – even if they can stand.
🔐 Ireland-Specific Prevention Tips:
✅ Wear BRIGHT swimwear – Neon orange, pink, red or yellow is most visible underwater. Avoid blue, grey or white – they blend in.
✅ Drain paddling pools after use. In warm weather, children wander out early. Toddlers can drown in just 2 inches of water.
✅ Designate a ‘Water Watcher’. One adult, no distractions, swapping every 15 mins.
✅ Stay within arm’s reach of young children – swimming lessons don't prevent panic.
✅ Don’t rely on floaties or armbands – use proper CE-approved lifejackets in rivers or lakes.
✅ Supervise teens, too. Risk-taking, jumping in, cold shock — it’s real.
✅ Avoid alcohol if supervising. One second of lost focus is all it takes.
✅ Know what to do – Learn CPR. Reach or throw, never jump in after.
🚨 Most child drownings happen silently, in familiar places:
• Garden paddling pools
• Rivers and canals
• Lakes, quarries
• Holiday villas or pools
• Beaches without lifeguards
Let’s not lose another child this summer.
Just one post can protect someone else’s family.
