Ireland’s Free Contraception Scheme (FCS)

The Free Contraception Scheme is a national initiative run by the HSE, designed to make contraception accessible, affordable, and convenient for young women. Its goal is to remove financial barriers and empower women to make informed reproductive choices.

Who Can Access It:

Young women aged 17–26 living in Ireland.

Those attending clinics participating in the scheme, such as iLash Young Women’s Sexual Health Clinic.

What It Covers:

GP Visits Related to Contraception – No out-of-pocket cost for consultations.

Prescriptions – Pills, patches, and other contraceptive medications are provided free of charge.

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) – Coils (IUDs), Implanon implants, and injections are included.

Follow-Up Care – Monitoring, support, and advice after receiving contraception to ensure safe and effective use.

How It Helps:

Removes Financial Barriers: Cost is never a reason to delay or avoid contraception.

Supports Informed Choice: Healthcare professionals provide guidance on the best method for your lifestyle and health.

Since 1989, the centre has been delivering trauma informed services and programmes to support women’s wellbeing, safety, and recovery. Services include: Domestic Abuse Trauma Psychotherapy and Counselling, Women’s Health & Family Planning Clinics, Young Women’s Sexual Health Clinics, Counselling Services, Trauma-informed mindful and creative workshops, A listening service, A safe, confidential space where women can heal in mind and body.
