Suffering from an Ingrown Toenail?

How to know if your nail is ingrown and needs removed:

🔰History of pain, swelling, redness or infection in and around the nail.

🔰This can happen to any nail but mainly affects the big toenails.

✅Cutting the top of the nail back WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM as the visible nail is not the problem- it is the nail under the skin that is ingrown (like a tooth that anchors into the gum). The only way to treat the ingrown nail is with nail surgery.

What does Nail Surgery involve?

🔰The toe is numbed with anaesthetic and will remain numb for 2-3 hours (much like the way you would have it done at the dentist for filling).
🔰The piece of nail that is ingrown at the side is removed and then a chemical is put into the nail bed to stop that piece regrowing.
🔰This is a permanent result, there is no need to remove the entire nail- cosmetically it is a good result- you will just end up with a slightly narrower nail.

Wearing shoes with a narrow toe box (like ) COMPRESS your toes into an unnatural position.

Why does this matter? - When your toes can't splay out it INSTANTLY minimises your foot stability - this can lead to excessive pronation.

Narrow footwear can be a key contributor to developing foot conditions like Plantar Fasciitis and Bunions.

If you care about your feet - you need to care about finding the best shoes with wide toe boxes that allow the feet to spread out.

Neuromuscular massage is a specialised form of manual therapy that helps stimulate both the nervous system and muscular system together through hands-on soft tissue and osteopathic techniques. Neuromuscular massage is very beneficial in sports rehabilitation and encourages blood flow, flexibility and the release of muscular tension through various techniques which include: Soft Tissue Release (STR), Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Stripping and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Stretching. Neuromuscular massage is also proven to help with athletic performance, reduce the risk of muscle injuries and identify muscle imbalances that could lead to further injury.

The video below features Joseph who attended the clinic with hamstring and calf pain. We now offer neck, back and shoulder massage.

Buying school shoes?

Here’s the Foot & Ankle Clinic’s top tips to take some of the hassle from shopping & help prevent you from making the common mistakes we see every year ☺️

⭐️ Have feet properly measured - don’t be tempted to buy shoes that are too big to allow children to ‘grow into’, there should be a thumbnail width between the end of the shoe and the longest toe

We offer a measuring service here at Foot & Ankle Clinic 👣

Shoes that are too big wear out more quickly!!

⭐️ Fastenings - Always have a lace up or Velcro fastening on your shoe, this holds the foot in place so it does not slip forwards causing toes to scrunch and claw

⭐️ You should not be able to bend the shoe in half and the sole should not twist - a good shoe should bend at the toe but NOT under the arch

⭐️The back part of the shoe at the heel should be strong and not able to compress

⭐️ Check there is enough room for the toes - get your child to wiggle their toes to ensure there is enough space

Lastly if your child is experiencing pain in the feet and ankles or knees please get them checked out by a podiatrist - we are here to help ❤️
