The upper back, also known as the thoracic region of the spine, has a natural slight curve. The spine naturally curves in the neck, upper back, and lower back to help absorb shock and support the weight of the head.

Kyphosis occurs when this natural arch is larger than normal. People who have kyphosis appear to be continuosly slouching and have noticeable rounding of the shoulders. Kyphosis can lead to excess pressure on the spine, causing pain. It may also lead to breathing difficulties due to pressure put on the lungs.

Here are a few yoga stretches that can help prevent kyphosis, or help prevent the pain associated with kyphosis.

Let's talk about a relatively unknown muscle that can be a cause of lower back pain.

The quadratus lumborum, or QL, is a key piece of your core. While technically an abdominal muscle, the QL is located deep enough that it has tremendous influence over the lumbar region in your low back.

Sitting for prolonged periods of time affects the stabilizer muscles of the vertebrae, effectively shutting them off. When these muscles no longer help in the support of the spine and lower back, then the QL takes up the slack. Which is a job it’s not meant to do therefore overtime it fatigues and tightens. This can be a major factor in lower back pain.
