Let’s Talk About Scars! 🔍

Scars are a natural part of healing, but they can cause issues like pain, tightness, or sensitivity. There can also be long-term consequences as a result of hidden, deep-seated adhesions.

The good news? 😃

Understand your scar and how best to manage it can make a huge difference in how it heals and feels! 💯

Over the next 10 days, I’m diving deep into the topic of Scars—breaking down everything from:

🔍 Different types of scars

🔍 Common symptoms scars can cause (short & long-term)

🔍 How hydration, massage & treatments like LymphaTouch can help

🔍 Practical tips to support scar healing

If you have a scar—whether it’s a recent or old scar—this series is for you!

😳 This is probably TMI, but…”

I hear this ALL the time. But let me be clear—when it comes to your pelvic health, nothing is too much information 💁‍♀️

☺️ If you can’t share it with your pelvic health physio, where can you?

Too many women wait months or even years before getting help because they feel embarrassed talking about something that’s a private or ‘embarrassing’ issue.

🩷 So this post is just your reminder that Down Below Physio clinic is a safe space for you to discuss your pelvic health, all aspects of it, no matter what.

😉 TMI is not a thing at Down Below Physio clinic.

Are You Doing Your Pelvic Floor Exercises Correctly? 🤔

You might be wondering

❓ How do I know if I’m doing them right?
❓ How many should I do?
❓ How often?
❓ How long until I see results?

So many women coming to see me have ‘how to’ questions and they feel so much better when they get the right advice – and leave the clinic confident in what they’re doing!

Pelvic floor exercises can be confusing, and without the right guidance, it's easy to make common mistakes—like squeezing too hard, clenching your bum, tensing your whole body, or holding your breath! 😮‍💨

📈 Getting 1-1 support tailored to your individual starting point makes all the difference. I’ll help you find the right technique, the right effort, and the right plan for your needs.

If you’re going to spend your valuable time on something, make sure you’re doing it right! ✔️

⚠️ Avoid Perineal Tearing! ⚠️

Sharing some of my TOP TIPS that can help you to

✅️ reduce your risk of sustaining a more severe grade of tear (3rd or 4th degree tear)

✅️ reduce your risk of requiring an episiotomy or other intervention

These are particularly helpful if it's your first delivery as your tissues have never had to stretch to this degree before.

📣📣 Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get discussed enough: symptoms at the back passage after having a baby.

⚡️These are particularly common after a third or fourth degree tear.

😥 I see so many clients who are dealing with these issues—faecal incontinence, staining and soiling, flatal incontinence (where wind escapes), or pain—and I understand how 👉 distressing and frustrating they can be.

😒 At what's meant to be an incredibly happy time for you, enjoying life with your new baby, you're navigating these issues.

These aren’t just “minor inconveniences”; they can have a HUGE impact on your confidence, daily life, and even your mental health.

📣📣 But here’s the thing—you don’t have to live with them. There is so much that can be done to improve these symptoms and get you feeling like yourself again ☺️

✨ Imagine not having to worry about where the nearest toilet is.

✨ Imagine no longer stressing about smells or unexpected accidents.

✨ Imagine confidently attending your yoga class without the fear of passing gas at the quietest moment (because of course it happens then!).

🙋‍♀️🩷 I’m here for you. These symptoms are common, but they’re not something you just have to put up with. If this resonates with you, please reach out—I’d love to help you. 🩷

Consistency is key when it comes to pelvic floor exercises—I get it, though! Remembering to do them every day can be tough! 😣

🥴 It’s something so many of you say you struggle with - life gets busy!

✔️ That’s why having a plan and finding ways to build those habits is essential.

I’ve outlined a few strategies in this post and remember 👉 consistency doesn’t mean perfection—it means showing up for yourself every day, even if it’s just a small step.

🩷 And when you do the right thing consistently, the results will follow.

💌 If you need guidance on what you’re doing, accountability to stay on track, or help building the habit—come see me at Down Below Physio clinic.

Mama, we see you. 🩷 You’ve been giving everything you have to care for your little one, and it’s easy to forget about yourself in the process.

😣 I know how easy it is to ignore the low back aches, the occasional leak when you sneeze, or the feeling that something just isn’t quite right down there.

You tell yourself, 👉 “I’ll deal with it later,” but let’s be honest—later rarely comes.

Your body has been through so much during pregnancy and birth. It deserves a little love, just like you give to everyone else.

💁‍♀️ A Postnatal Check-Up is your chance to pause, take stock, and make sure YOU are healing as well as possible—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

😌 We’ll talk about everything in detail, in privacy, unrushed. It’s the ideal time to bring up any of those little concerns that have been weighing on the back of your mind.

It shouldn't be about just ticking over day-to-day and managing ok, it should be about feeling really good. 🙌 When you feel good, you can give so much more to your family.

And this post is a little reminder to prioritise yourself: 🤳 Book a postnatal check-up today and give yourself that love and support you deserve - www.downbelowphysio.ie

Don’t wait until “later”—you deserve this. Let’s make it happen. 💕

😖💥 I uploaded a reel the other day talking about how many issues can be stemming from stuck, stiff perineal scar tissue (from a tear or episiotomy) but let’s talk now more about the SOLUTION - Perineal Scar Massage.

😬 It can be off-putting to think of touching down there when you’ve had a tear/episiotomy. You might be worried it will be painful, will feel strange or that you’ll ‘do something wrong’.

That’s all understandable.

🙋‍♀️👋 That’s where I can help. I can explain to you what it is you’re meant to do and how it should feel.

💯 A simple, regular routine of perineal scar massage can give great relief and results if you are having pelvic floor issues after a tear or episiotomy.

I often have clients attending for a Postnatal Check Up, saying that they have Haemorrhoids after pregnancy and delivery, but that they didn’t even know what they were before they had them! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ (They can be common after vaginal delivery where you’ve been pushing intensively for a long time).

So, let’s talk about the symptoms - how to recognise if you have them:

😖 Itching or irritation in your a**l region

😖 Pain or discomfort, especially when sitting

😖 Swelling around your a**s

😖 A lump near your a**s, which might be sensitive or painful

😖 Bleeding during bowel movements (you might notice blood on the toilet paper)

😖 Not emptying your bowel fully because it’s too painful

Was this helpful? Have you had the all too real life experience of them first hand? 😭 Let me
know below! 💬👇

I'll be sharing more in the next few days on this topic!
