Heart Month: Managing your Stress for a Healthier Heart

Stress is a normal part of life…… but when it becomes constant, it can take a toll on your heart. Chronic stress raises blood pressure, disrupts sleep and increases the risk of heart disease. This month, commit to showing your heart a little extra care by managing stress in healthy ways.

❤️ Stay Connected – Talking with loved ones, sharing laughter, joining new groups, increasing participation in social activities and accessing supports that can helps you to reduce emotional strain

❤️ Move Your Body – Regular physical activity helps release tension, lowers stress hormones and strengthens your heart

❤️ Breathe and Pause – Taking a few pockets of time for yourself every day can help you to reset from stressful situations. Try deep breathing or short mindfulness breaks a couple of times a day. Even two minutes can calm your nervous system and reduce stress

❤️ Sleep Well – Quality rest restores both your body and mind. Aim for between seven and nine hours of good sleep each night

❤️ Set Boundaries – Manage demands on your time and energy by learning to say no to things you know you shouldn’t be tolerating, prioritise your tasks, and carve out time for yourself.

This Heart Month, take one small step toward reducing stress. Your heart will thank you for caring for it.

At Longford Social Prescribing Service, we can provide you with a range of information, resources and strategies to help you manage and reduce your stress.

Autumn is here...... the evenings are starting to slip away a little earlier every day and the summer light is beginning to fade.

For many people, this is an enjoyable time of year as they wind down to a slower pace and look forward to warm, cosy evenings and hearty food. For others, it’s less appealing as they struggle with deteriorating weather, fewer daylight hours and an increased risk of loneliness and social isolation.

While we might not be able to do all of the same things as we enjoyed in the Summer, Autumn is a great time of year to find new interests and join social groups. Many activities that took a break over the Summer are now back up and running throughout Co. Longford. This includes indoor activities like seniors’ social groups, art and writing groups, knitting and sewing groups, music and singing groups, exercise and dance classes – there are multiple opportunities available locally.

If you, or someone you know, would benefit from getting out of the house more, connecting with other people and making good use of the longer, darker evenings, please contact us at Longford Social Prescribing Service. We will listen to your interests, find out what matters to you and match you with suitable activities and groups.

Our service is free and for anyone aged 18 and over.

Please contact us on 087 458 1178 or 087 448 0835 or by email to socialprescribing@lcrl.ie

Yeahhh - NEW VENUE CONFIRMED TODAY 🥳

We have found a new venue for our Third Thursday Open Mic Nights. We're very happy and grateful to Margaret Gregg at 'The Bottleneck Bar & Beer Garden' in Longford Town for confirming the availability of their venue for our 'Longford Creatives Open Mic Night'.

We look forward now to welcoming musicians, writers, poets, comedy acts and anyone who feels like joining us on the Third Thursday of every month. September will be our fourth monthly event & we'd love to welcome you!

To Book a slot - Email: longfordcreatives@gmail.com, DM us here on the page or just come along on the night.

Our open mic nights are low key, no pressure events for both new and seasoned musicians, singers, writers, poets and artists of all kinds to perform and practice among a community of their peers, where there's no judgement, only encouragement.

We also welcome visual artists, sculptors and photpgraphers etc to come along and share their work and insights on their creative practice with us.

Established in June by three local creatives. Our aim was and is to develop a welcoming space where local creatives of all kinds, can get together, socialise and share their skills and talents.

We're delighted that the management of The Bottleneck Bar understand and support our vision.

We can't offer you payment to perform. We're three volunteers, also creatives, trying to develop a regular, grassroots, creative community get together for those of you who want to practice, build your confidence, gain skills, recieve feedback and make new friends. 🎼🎧🎤🎬🎹🥁🪇🎷🎺🎸🎨📖📚🎭
