100 years ago: in 1923 a mother's defence to a charge of keeping poteen was that it was only gin which she kept "for the use of her child." Well that's alright then... oh, wait, it really was! Once it was proven to be gin all was fine and the court in Dungloe acquitted her of all charges. Because giving your child gin is so much better than an adult drinking poteen.
