Robbie had a couple of great visits to research farms last week looking at recent developments in a systems approach to soil care, soil health & reducing costs for farmers.

He had a chance to meet up again with Jay Fuhrer the lead educator at Menoken Farm and hear about their most recent research

On his research trip to USA last week Robbie met with Dwayne Beck at Dakota Lakes Farm

The Dakota Lakes Research Farm’s primary goal is to identify, research, and demonstrate methods of strengthening and stabilizing the agriculture economy. The research enterprise at the farm is operated by South Dakota State University. The not-for-profit Dakota Lakes Research Farm Corporation manages the production enterprise and owns the land, the fixed facilities, and much of the field equipment. They work with Mother Nature to ensure their land is protected, fertile and produces yields to feed the world for many generations to come. This practice results in maintaining and encouraging living soils, clean water, healthy foods and ample wildlife.

The Dakota Lakes Research Farm has both a research and a production enterprise. The production enterprise must produce sufficient profits to fund a majority of the operational expenses of the research enterprise.

We’ve had some queries re The Farming For Water EIP Project

The project specifically focuses on reducing losses of phosphorus, nitrogen, sediment and, where relevant, pesticides to rivers, lakes, wetlands and all watercourses from agricultural lands. By promoting the adoption of innovative best practice in nutrient management and the application of nature-based Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) and other suitable measures at the farm level, much can be done to protect and maintain water quality.
