Welcome to the Irish Cognitive Analytic Therapy page. This page is a place where we can share information about CAT, and where you can find more information about Training in CAT and CPD.
ICAT’s aim is to promote Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) and its benefits for people, communities and services. We provide structured training programs in CAT, and CPD training days. We can also support services develop and enhance what they provide through the application of CAT ideas and approaches.
CAT is an integrative model of therapy which, as its name suggests, draws upon both cognitive and psychoanalytic theories. At its centre is its assertion of the importance of early life experiences and the roles and strategies we develop in response to these. As such it is a theory of how we are as people, rather that a theory of specific disorders or problems. (Corbridge, Brummer and Coid, Cognitive Analytic Therapy - Distinctive Features, 2018, p 7).
CAT is a flexible and intuitive therapy and therapeutic approach used as a “direct”, individual or group therapy with clients, and as an “indirect” approach, for example team reflective practice or team consultancy.
