Early orthodontic assessment can sometimes make a very important difference in a child’s dental development 👦🦷

This lovely young patient presented with:
• a trapped upper front tooth
• lack of space for the developing upper lateral incisor
• a crossbite caused by a narrow upper jaw

Because the problem was identified early, we were able to guide the developing teeth and jaws using a rapid palatal expander (RPE), followed by gentle alignment of the impacted tooth.

Over approximately 12 months, we achieved a healthy and stable outcome that will support future growth and development.

Importantly, not every child needs early orthodontic treatment. However, early assessment allows us to identify the cases where timely intervention can make treatment simpler and more predictable later on.

At Lusk Orthodontics, we are passionate about providing specialist orthodontic care for children, teenagers, and adults across North Dublin and beyond.

Continuing on the potential benefits of palatal expansion in children and adults.

Some evidence suggests links between sleep disordered breathing, mouth breathing, ear health, and jaw function. In selected patients, widening a narrow upper jaw may support better nasal breathing, improved Eustachian tube function, and a more balanced bite.

However, these issues are multifactorial, which is why careful diagnosis and evidence-based treatment planning are essential.

Clear aligner therapy is one of the most popular options in modern orthodontics.

It is also one of the most commonly compromised when it comes to quality.

While the technology has made treatment more accessible, the real difference lies in diagnosis, planning, and understanding the limits of what aligners can and cannot do. That requires experience and precision.

At Lusk Orthodontics, we are proud to deliver clear aligner treatment to the highest orthodontic standards.

Our volume reflects our experience, recognised through our work with the Angel Aligner system 🏆
But more importantly, our quality is defined by clinical standards. We are the only orthodontic practice in Ireland delivering aligner therapy in line with the European Board of Aligner Orthodontics (EBAO) from the

High volume means nothing without quality.

We do it properly, or not do it at all.

Whether it is clear aligners, fixed braces, lingual orthodontics, early treatment, skeletal anchorage or complex surgical cases, you are in safe and expert hands.

Palatal expansion is not just about crowding.

In the right patient, it can improve bite function and support better breathing 🦷
But it starts with proper diagnosis, not assumptions.

Narrow upper jaw? There’s a precise, modern solution.

This is the setup phase for a MARPE (Mini-Implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expander) in a non-growing patient. Using digital planning and skeletal anchorage, we can achieve true maxillary expansion where conventional methods fall short.

• No guesswork
• Controlled, targeted expansion
• Designed for adults and complex cases

Palatal expansion isn’t one-size-fits-all. Diagnosis always comes first.

Big teeth? Buck teeth? Should we wait... or act now? 👀

One of the most common questions parents ask is when a child should start orthodontic treatment.

Some children are best treated later during the teenage growth spurt. Others benefit from starting earlier to reduce specific problems before they become more significant.

At Lusk Orthodontics, treatment timing is tailored to the child. Sometimes the best advice is to wait. In other cases, early treatment is the better option.

This case was treated by Dr Erfan Salloum.

The patient first attended at age 8 with prominent upper front teeth, lips that did not close comfortably, and a lower jaw that was behind the upper jaw.

Dr Salloum recommended early treatment in this case because of:

• Increased risk of trauma to the front teeth
• Concern about appearance
• Opportunity to improve confidence and function

Treatment involved 12 months of Twin Block therapy 🦷 followed later by fixed braces.

The result was an excellent smile transformation and a more balanced profile ✨

Not every child needs early treatment. But for the right child, at the right time, it can make a major difference.

Big overjet. Recessed lower jaw. Many people think jaw surgery is the only option in adults or non-growing patients. Sometimes it is. But not always.

This patient had a difficult Class II bite with a large overjet and chose not to have surgery. We treated the case using customised lingual braces with (hidden braces behind the teeth) together with a Herbst appliance. 🦷

The result:
• Overjet greatly reduced ✔️
• Bite corrected ✔️
• Improved side profile 📈
• Excellent tooth control 🎯
• Stable result 3 years later ⏳

Lingual braces are not only cosmetic. In the right case, they can be a powerful option for complex orthodontic treatment.

If you are looking for braces, hidden braces, or orthodontic treatment in Dublin or North County Dublin, we are happy to help. 🤝

Teen braces are not one-size-fits-all 👌

The best option depends on the diagnosis, age, growth stage, and complexity of the case. For many teenagers, conventional metal braces are still the most reliable and efficient choice. Ceramic braces can offer a more discreet look, while clear aligners may suit selected mild to moderate cases.

At Lusk Orthodontics, we focus on choosing the right appliance for the right patient, not just the most fashionable one. Diagnosis always comes first.
