Waiting for Autumn babies 🍁🌿🍂🍃

Much bad news all around us, so it is important for me to be grateful for what I have and what I have become🍁.

I'm shedding a few leaves 🍃🍂🍁 but I'm still going strong and getting ready for new beginnings 🐣

Our homebirth service is going through the same changes ...but don't listen to the old ...dare I say ..chestnuts 🌰🐿️🤦 that our service isn't safe!

National and international evidence shows it is and this women centred safe service is here to stay.

Best news for now is that we have expanded our team 🥳 and west Cork women will keep their choice in childbirth for hopefully a long time yet🍁🍁🍁🍁🌿🍃🍂🍁🍁🍁

Please put this i your diaries. The Maternity Strategy has NOT achieved better choices for women. The same bias exists when it comes to home birth and/or midwifery led care. Wide areas without options. This needs to be addressed.

And...it's a wrap...nearly.
The CUMH homebirth team is ( almost ) fully integrated after our three day cerner training with the lovely Dee 💻.
We keep our self employed status( independence ) but are soon able to input our own visits and data into the system.

💻 Is there still a huge questionmark over the fact that the service USER is not able to access their own data? Absolutely!!

💻 Is it highlighting the fact that many areas in Cork don't even have phone reception, let alone internet? Totally!

💻 Does it mean it's doubling our workload? You bet!

But for us, it is a further step to try and change the system from within.

🐣 We are the only service providing continuity of CARER!
🐣 You are with your chosen midwife from pregnancy, throughout labour, birth and 2 weeks after
🐣 We have a 97% breastfeeding rate
🐣 We let you choose who is present at your birth
🐣 We visit you in your own home
🐣 We provide ante natal preparation and parenting classes
🐣 And so much more

Maybe some people thought we wouldn't be up for the challenge of the new, shiny computerized world but let me reassure them...we are SO ready and will make it our own! 🐣🐣🐣

Home water birth is special, for many reasons. 🌊

Unlike the hospital, where you just open the tap and the water 🌊 flows at the right temperature, home birthing people need to set everything up themselves 🐣

We were so lucky recently that a great support team was at hand 👌 to have everything fall into place 🐣

A recent birthing mama needed zero intervention, no examinations, no meds.
We were just there to admire her strength and reassure her, that baby was doing as magnificently as she was doing herself 💖🐣💖

Consider the HSE/ CUMH home birth service, provided by Self-employed Community Midwives like me....it is so worth it 💖✨💖

I am so delighted to be invited by UCC to talk to midwifery students a couple times a year about my work as a community midwife. Thank you A and N for having me today and give my power point presentation on 35y of attending home births in Cork.
The struggle is by no means over but ...we haven't gone away yet 😅
Thanks to the students as well 🙏
