Post 2 for World Prematurity Day. Well done to all of those who have had a baby arrive earlier than expected. Breastmilk is medicine for premature babies. Breastmilk automatically adapts if a baby has been born before 37 weeks. It uniquely adapts to the very specific needs of a premie baby.

Pumping milk is hard. Expressing for a premie baby is very challenging, especially with all the additional stress, worry, and recovery from birth.

Well done to those supporting the families of early babies, those caring for the babies in SCBUs and NICUs, milk donors, and to the parents and their warrior babies 💞

Tag a friend to elt then know how proud you are of their work in this area 💕

Post 1 was about why breastmilk is important for premature infants.

Did you know that breast milk is like a superhero shield for premature babies?💪

Studies have shown that breastfed premature babies are less likely to develop serious illnesses like sepsis, necrotising enterocolitis, and pneumonia. Those premies who get breastmilk gain weight better, and reach developmental milestones sooner than formula-fed babies. 🤱🍼

The music I've chosen for this is also poignant as the singer-songwriter Dan Wilson wrote it while his wife was pregnant with their first child Coco. Coco was born 3 months early just before they started recording this song (and the album it is on). The day the song was released was the day their daughter was discharged from NICU, giving the words greater significance.

This is why your baby rarely has bad breath!

Breastmilk and baby saliva combine to produce hydrogen peroxide, which has antimicrobial properties. This chemical reaction was discovered by Australian researchers in 2015. This interaction between breastmilk and baby saliva is described as a unique biochemical synergism. Baby saliva contains ten times the necessary compounds compared to adult saliva, making it potent in this reaction. The hydrogen peroxide generated from this mixture can kill staph and salmonella infections and inhibit bacterial growth for up to 24 hours. The transition from infant to adult saliva begins when the baby is weaned. Each time the baby feeds, there is the potential for immediate and prolonged antimicrobial effects in the baby's mouth and gut. It is fascinating to note that this natural process can serve as medicine to prevent and treat infections in the baby's oral cavity and digestive system.
