Iโ€™m excited to share that Iโ€™ve recently had the incredible opportunity to revise the Five Animal Frolics series with Professor Hu Xiaofei, a distinguished expert in Qi Gong and traditional Chinese medicine! ๐ŸŒŸโœจ

๐ŸŒฟ What is Five Animal Frolics (Wi Qin Xi ไบ”็ฆฝๆˆ)? Itโ€™s an ancient Qi Gong practice inspired by Taoist sages who observed nature to create exercises that mirror the movements of five powerful animals: the Tiger, Deer, Bear, Monkey, and Bird. Each animal represents unique qualities like strength, flexibility, and vitality. ๐Ÿ…๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’๐Ÿฆœ

๐ŸŒŸ Why Animals? Animals have incredible giftsโ€”think of a dogโ€™s amazing sense of smell or a catโ€™s impressive climbing skills. The Five Animal Frolics teaches us how to channel these natural strengths into our own lives for better health and balance. ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

๐Ÿ’ก A Bit of History: This practice was created by the Taoist sage Hua Tuo 1800 yeas ago, who was also Chinaโ€™s first surgeon to use anaesthesia! His teachings on the Five Animal Frolics aimed to improve health and longevity through playful and effective exercises. ๐Ÿ†

๐Ÿ’ช What Can You Learn? The Five Animal Frolics helps balance your bodyโ€™s energy, promotes wellness, and offers a fun way to stay fit. Curious to learn more? Join us in our Summer Sessions in Manorhamilton Sports Ground every Monday @5:30! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒฟ

QiGong asks us to be flexible, to explore and to listen. If we can learn to be flexible and listen to our bodies, we can also learn to listen, or pay attention to our thoughts and observe our opinions or beliefs.
โ€œSeeking the truth is not about validating the story in your head. It's about rigorously vetting and accepting the story that matches the reality in the worldโ€ says organisational psychologist and author Adam Grant.
Confirmation Bias is a cognitive bias where people tend to seek out, interpret, and remember information that confirms their pre-existing beliefs and opinions. This means that people often ignore information that contradicts what they already believe and only pay attention to information that supports their beliefs.
The poem below offers the way of overcoming confirmation bias. Join our QiGong practice and learn to be more flexible, observant, and present.

In Chinese philosophy, Qi, or chi, represents the fundamental life energy permeating the universe. Although invisible, it exists in air, water, food, and sunlight. Within the body, Qi is the unseen vital force sustaining life. Inherited and acquired through food and air intake, Qi Gong emphasises breath as a major source. The balance of physical, mental, and emotional aspects influences Qi levels. When imbalanced, a medical diagnosis may result in a "Disease."
Qi flows through the meridians in the body, with 12 main ones aligning with traditional Chinese organs. These include the lung, large intestines, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, urinary bladder, kidney, liver, gallbladder, pericardium, and the "triple warmer" representing the torso. Each organ corresponds to specific emotions on the mental level:
Anger with the liver
Joy with the heart
Worry with the spleen
Sadness and grief with the lung
Fear with the kidney.
From a Chinese medical perspective, emotional imbalance can be both a symptom and a cause of physical issues.

Developed in China over 4000 years ago, Qi Gong is a gentle exercise with healing and preventive properties. Involving whole-body movement, mindful focus, and deep breathing, it opens energy pathways, facilitates smooth energy flow, and restores organ harmony. This self-cultivation practice yields powerful healing results and is renowned for its anti-ageing benefits.

Often referred to as "Moving Meditation," Qi Gong positively impacts the body, mind, and spirit. With numerous types and forms, varying in movements and postures, all share similar benefits, albeit some are more specialized in focus and can target specific illnesses.

My QiGong journey brought me to Daoyin Kangyang International School, specialising in ancient Chinese Daoyin (QiGong) practice, traditional and modern medicine, sport science, and psychology, where I was awarded 5th Duan qualification. Daoyin Kangyang is a form of Qigong system promoted by Hu Xiaofei, a Chinese martial artist and professor at the Beijing Sport University. It integrates physical movement with mental cultivation and controlled breathing.

One of my great realisations in life is that equanimity and sense of inner happiness is available to us regardless of our age, social status, and fitness level. Being for many years stuck in the rat race, I discovered the philosophy and practice of โ€œlet it beโ€, helping me to get back in the driverโ€™s seat of my own wellbeing.
I am contributing to the local community since 2021 and delighted to continue providing QiGong classes for people who want to enhance vitality and life force energy, tapping into the healing potential within our bodies. Our QiGong classes are on Mondays at 17:30 in Manorhamilton Bee Park Community Centre, Co Leitrim.
