Use to share your experiences and pics from the island! Encapsulated in the Saw Doctors' song ‘Will you meet me on Clare Island?'’, Clare Island is located 3.5 miles off the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland. The ferry crossing from Roonagh Pier takes 20 minutes and there is every chance that you will be accompanied on your journey by a school of dolphins. Clare Island is the largest (8km long and 5km wide) of the 365 islands in Clew Bay. Famous as the ancestral home of the legendary Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley (Granuaile), she has a population of about 160 people; economic activities include farming, fishing and tourism with numerous other small businesses also supporting a vibrant community. Clare Island’s silhouette is dominated by the giant hump of Knockmore at 461 metres on her western edge and the more gently sloping Knocknaveen to her centre. Her western cliffs are among the most dramatic in Europe and are home to large numbers of nesting sea birds. Once on Clare Island, there is so much to see and do – the island’s rich history, geological and biological landscape (studied in depth in the Clare Island Survey) can be explored on foot, bike or by mini bus. Be sure to take time out to view the Blue Flag Beach, Granuaile’s Castle, the 12th century Cistercian Abbey, the Lighthouse, the Napoleonic Tower and the various Bronze-Age sites. Why not call in and see the Heritage Centre or Ballytoughey Loom? There are also plenty of activities to suit everyone including hiking, cycling, fishing, swimming, boat trips, yoga retreats, weaving courses and a variety of adventure activities. Clare Island plays host to a number of annual festivals and events including the: 10k road race, local theatre group production, Yacht Race, Junior Céilí, Annual Bonfire Beach Party, Annual Football tournament, Snas ar do Bhlas - Irish weekend, Bard Summer School, Regatta, Tall Ship Celebrations, Comhaltas seisiúns, Open Mic Nights, Féile Cheoil, Adventure Race, Film Festival, and Christmas Concert & Market. Clare Island also boasts a rich cultural heritage witnessed through its many craftspeople, artists, musicians and dancers. There are two pubs on the island offering plenty of local craic agus ceol. Accommodation on the island is of a high standard and includes camping, a hostel, the lighthouse, B&B’s and self-catering. Delicious island fare is available from 11 am daily. In the off-season you are advised to check our website for restaurant opening hours. A great place to go if you are looking for a holiday, weekend away, a night out or just a day trip – so go on, take yourself to ! www.clareisland.ie

Clare Island Completes Its First Climate Mitigation Project!

Clare Island is delighted to announce the completion of its first, of many projects, focused on climate mitigation, proudly funded by the CLÁR Programme.

This summer, with CLÁR funding, we successfully installed PV solar systems on two of our key community buildings.

At the Clare Island Community Crèche, the new solar installation now produces near 100% of the building’s energy requirements. The system also includes a battery storage solution that automatically takes over during power outages, ensuring there is no disruption to the power supply.

At the Clare Island Community Centre, the solar system now generates up to half of the building’s energy needs during the height of the summer season. Any surplus power is exported directly to the national grid, contributing renewable energy beyond our island community.

This project represents an important milestone in our ongoing efforts toward climate mitigation and adaptation. Next steps include:
1. the next iteration of Clare Island’s Energy Masterplan; and
2. making our Community Centre a fully self-powered and resilient building, serving as a warm, safe, and welcoming hub for islanders year-round, especially during widespread power outages

We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved this year and look forward to continuing to collaborate with local authorities and government partners as we advance Clare Island’s sustainability and resilience goals.

A huge thank you to MPE Renewables who went over & above to educate us on solar PV systems & ensured Clare Island incorporated the best in technology for our community buildings.

We would like to sincerely thank the Department of Rural and Community Development (DRCDG) for their ongoing support through the CLÁR Programme in helping Clare Island move toward a greener, more self-sufficient future.

Exciting News for Clare Island! 🚴‍♀️

We’re thrilled to announce that Clare Island, in partnership with Mayo County Council, has received €500,000 under the Outdoor Recreational Infrastructure Scheme (Measure 3) for the extension of the Clew Bay Bike Trail to the iconic Clare Island Lighthouse where the trail head is situated.

Huge thanks to Minister Dara Calleary for his continued support in allocating this much needed funding, and to Anna Connor, Maura Murphy, and Tia Conway of Mayo County Council for believing in our vision and selecting Clare Island for the county’s top-funded project.
We’re also very grateful to Fionnan Nestor of Fáilte Ireland for collaborating with us and supporting sustainable tourism development on the island.

This investment will transform the existing path to the lighthouse into a safe, high-quality trail for cyclists, walkers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts — enhancing our tourism offering, creating employment, and supporting the long-term sustainability and future of Clare Island.

This project truly embodies the spirit of community collaboration, environmental stewardship, and forward-thinking rural development. A huge step forward for our community and for outdoor recreation in Mayo! 🌿💚

Clare Island Community Centre – the beating heart of our wonderful island.

We are delighted to announce the completion of the Community Centre Investment Fund project at the Clare Island Community Centre in recent months.

The fund, of just over a quarter of a million euros, saw vital investment into our community centre to make it a resilient, yet comfortable space for our community & visitors alike.

The works carried out included:
🔹 Replacement and upgrade of all doors and windows for heat retention & energy efficiency
🔹 Three-phase power upgrade to enhance operational reliability & future proofing for energy microgeneration
🔹 Complete refurbishment and upgrade of male, female & public toilets
🔹 Visual & painting refresh
🔹 Storeroom upgrade to enhance daily operations

This project simply wouldn’t have been possible without the invaluable funding from the Department of Rural & Community Development and Pobal, the hard work and dedication of our local trades and service providers, and of course, the commitment and vision of our Board & the management teams of Clare Island Community Centre & Cliara Development Company. We thank you for your ongoing & continued support.

This development marks Phase 1 in our ongoing journey to make the Clare Island Community Centre a space where islanders and visitors alike can come together in comfort – all year round. 🌊✨

Here’s to community spirit, progress, and the continued beating heart of Clare Island! 🟢🟡

Stay tuned for more community developments in Clare Island in the near future.

Clare Island voting day 2025 🗳️

Many residents on Clare Island cast their votes today in the 2025 Presidential Election at St Patrick’s NS.

For one Clare Island native, it marked her first ever democratic vote as Rachel Gallagher made the very important journey home across the water following exams for her Leaving Certificate at Sancta Maria College.

Aine Ryan of The Irish Times covers the three offshore Mayo Islands voting today including Inishbiggle, Inishturk and Clare Island.
