❤️ When you ask your clients for testimonials and receive a gem like this, it’s just so heartwarming. I had actually forgotten about this review from last year until I stumbled upon it today while clearing out old files on my laptop.

🌟 I often refer to the person who wrote this as “the poster girl of The Monaghan Herbalist.” She came to me with a rare determination. She had reached her limit, fed up with feeling unwell, the ineffective stomach tablets, and her constantly low energy. She decided enough was enough and came to seek support.

🌱 Honestly, my role was quite simple: I listened carefully and selected the herbs that would best support her journey. The real effort came from her. Without her unwavering resolve and commitment, she wouldn't have achieved the results she has today. I'm so impressed by her, it's almost intimidating - "hello Mrs. Determinaton, do you want my job?" 😅

💪 If you’re ready to take charge of your health and feel empowered, I would love to hear from you. Together, we can make it happen 🤝 ⚡

We’re back! I'm very excited to join Roisín once again for an evening of yoga, conversation, and community. Our last event was such a lovely experience—flowing through yoga, followed by an informative talk on gut health, nourishing foods, and healing herbs. We even had tea and nibbles to keep everyone relaxed, happy, and satisfied.

If this sounds like something you're sorry to have missed out on last time, then make sure you don't let it happen again! Contact Roisín to book your space. Looking forward to seeing you there 🧘🏻‍♀️🌿🤍

Seasonal Hair Shedding

I have had lots of people asking for advice on hair health recently. This is a common theme at this time of the year as many of us start to notice a lot more hair in the drain and on the hairbrush. Fear not! There is a reason behind your shedding and it’s probably not as sinister as you think.

Just like the trees lose their leaves, your scalp also enters a new phase in its growth cycle during autumn (An Fómhar). During the summer months, your very intelligent body sheds significantly *less* hair to shield your scalp from the sun’s UV rays and heat. Now, as the weather cools down (from cold to colder here in Ireland!) and the sun’s intensity fades, that extra protection isn’t necessary anymore, and your scalp sheds the excess hair. Makes sense, see?

Of course, there are more serious reasons for hair loss, so if your shedding continues for longer than 90 days and/or you notice any bald patches, I would recommend a visit to the doctor. Quite often iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, high cortisol, certain medications, autoimmune conditions and hormone imbalances can trigger hair loss - all things a blood test can flag up.

Have a look at the slides to see what foods and herbs I like to consume and recommend for healthy hair growth.

If you would like to tackle your hair health “head on” then feel free to reach out and make an appointment to come see me!

Reposting this with the correct day and date this time - life's no fun without bloopers eh! 🤪

Very excited to be taking part in this event! Myself and will be rambling around Mullan Village exploring the roadsides, lawns, pavement cracks and fields to see what herbs the village is hiding.

It will be a very informal little stroll, with lots of learning and open conversation around what you might have to share about hedgerow medicine too!

See you all there! 🌿🏵️🍄🍂🪻

😓PMDD, or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, is a severe form of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) that affects some women before their period. It causes extreme mood swings, irritability, depression, and physical symptoms that can seriously impact daily life. Think of it as PMS in overdrive. I've heard from lots of women how difficult it can be to function normally alongside symptoms of PMDD.

💊The route of treatment offered by GPs generally consists of prescribing anti-depressants for the week leading up to menstruation. While I'm not against medication, I don't believe medicating someone is the same thing as fixing them.

🧐 I want to get into the nitty-gritty details of the problem so we can address and treat the ROOT CAUSE. What do you eat? How do you sleep? Do you hydrate properly? Are you exposing yourself to endocrine disrupting foods and chemicals? Are you yo-yo dieting? How do you mitigate stress in your life? And so on, and so forth.

🥝 In the case referred to on the second slide, our primary focus was on diet and lifestyle. I'll never stop emphasizing this: you are what you eat! Additionally, physical activity plays a crucial role in improving your mood and your hormones. It all begins there. While supplements and herbs can be beneficial, achieving optimal health is a team effort that requires your active participation as well.

🗓️ If you suffer with any of the symptoms mentioned here, reach out and let's see what we can do about it! Bookings through DM, or via www.themonaghanherbalist.ie

Just to clarify, I *never* ever ask clients to refrain from taking medication, and if they wish to do so I always recommend discussing with their GP. In this instance, the client has a medically trained professional in the family, and through thorough research and well-informed advice he chose to try herbal medicine before prescription medication.

Now that I have my disclaimer out of the way...this case is a DOOZY! The client is an absolute dream to deal with because of his determination, commitment and willingness to change.

The strategy he is following is so simple. Number 1 on the list is diet. We are focusing on upping the wholefoods and reducing (but not eliminating) processed and animal foods. Number 2 is to increase intentional movement - no crazy workout regimes. Just good old moving around.

Once these things have been addressed, herbs can work much more efficiently. The prescriptions I formulated focus on bitters, alteratives, nutritives and some adaptogens to help with brain fog and fatigue.

The journey is not over yet, and I cannot wait to see how the next 3 months go for this gentleman. Onwards and upwards! (Or rather, onwards and downwards for the hba1c!) ✨☄️🌿

🗓️ If you would like to make an appointment to get some guidance on your health, get in touch via the website in my bio, or shoot me a DM on here! ❤️

Here are some herbs and dietary tools I try to incorporate into my daily routine to support my nervous system and mental health naturally. Rose is my flavor of the month right now—I’m adding it to everything from teas to tinctures, cacao lattes, and even porridge. It’s really nourishing my soul. (Still love all the other herbs though, don’t want to hurt any feelings!)

I also just want to point out that World Mental Health Week was last week, which for me, makes this post even more relevant now. Sometimes being scatty, forgetful, overloading my schedule, and procrastinating are signs that I’m not taking care of my mental health. I wanted to share this during World Mental Health Week, but when it comes to mental health, there's no 'right' time.

This post is a reminder to slow down a bit—stop being hard on yourself, stop thinking the timing has to be perfect or there's no point, stop biting off more than you can chew, stop saying yes to things you don’t really want to do, and start taking some time out to relax. Maybe journal, go for a walk, read a book, visit loved ones, plant a garden, or do whatever helps you find peace within yourself.

P.S. I forgot to mention exercise, but as you all know, it’s non-negotiable if you want to elevate your mood and live your best life both physically and emotionally. 💪✨

Just sitting in my dispensary, looking at my wall of herbs and feeling so lucky that this is my job!

I have a huge batch of prescriptions to get through - tinctures and powders for everything from PCOS, to arthritis, hair loss, IBS and weight loss. In past jobs when I've felt overloaded with work, my knee jerk reaction has been to quit and move on to greener pastures. Being a herbalist though; no matter how busy I get, I never feel like walking away. I feel so fortunate to get to potter about my dispensary every day, making medicine. And, don't even get me started on the happy-squirmy feeling I get when a client comes back to me saying how much better they feel 🫠🥲🥹

So, that's it - just a little post to share how happy I am to have found my purpose. Thanks to everyone who's been through my doors so far. Long may it last! 🌈🌿
